Estimates of regional surface carbon dioxide exchange and carbon and oxygen isotope discrimination during photosynthesis from concentration profiles in the atmospheric boundary layer

The integrating properties of the atmospheric boundary layer allow the influence of surface exchange processes on the atmosphere to be quantified and estimates of large-scale fluxes of trace gases and plant isotopic discrimination to be made. Five flights were undertaken over two days in and above the convective boundary layer (CBL) in a vegetated region in central Siberia. Vertical profiles of CO

Conformational fluctuations and large fluorescence spectral diffusion in conjugated polymer single chains at low temperatures

The fluorescence of single chains of the conductive polymer poly [2-methoxy-5-(2'-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene] (MEH-PPV) was studied by means of single-molecule spectroscopy at 15 K. MEH-PPV was deposited onto a surface from a toluene solution and covered with a polymer cap layer of poly(vinyl alcohol) spin-coated from an aqueous solution for protection against air. Because MEH-PPV is in

Climate Change and UV-B Impacts on Arctic Tundra and Polar Desert Ecosystems: Key Findings and Extended Summaries

The Arctic has become an important region in which to assess the impacts of current climate variability and amplification of projected global warming. This is because i) the Arctic has experienced considerable warming in recent decades (an average of about 3°C and between 4° and 5°C over much of the landmass); i) climate projections suggest a continuation of the warming trend with an increase in me

Effect of physical state of nonpolar lipids on rheology and microstructure of gluten-starch and wheat flour doughs

To clarify the effects of solid fat and liquid oil on dough in more detail in a simpler system, gluten-starch doughs with different gluten contents were investigated. The results from rheological measurements indicate that dough with a higher starch content has less resistance to strain and dough with a lower starch content has a rubber-like structure. The effects of the physical state of nonpolar

Inhibitory effect of honey bee venom on immune complex mediated leukocyte migration into rabbit knee-joints

The anti-inflammatory effect of purified honey bee venom (HBV) was studied using a recently described animal model in which preformed immune complexes were injected into rabbit knee-joints. As little as a single injection of 1.2 micrograms HBV/kg body weight subcutaneously significantly reduced the immune complex induced joint inflammation as measured by reduction in leukocyte counts in the joint

Diameter and compliance in the male human abdominal aorta: influence of age and aortic aneurysm

In this study changes in the diameter and compliance of the distal abdominal aorta (76 healthy Caucasian males, 5-71 years old) were determined non-invasively and related to age by means of an ultrasound phase-locked echo-tracking system. The diameter of the aorta increased not only in the period between 5 and 25 years of age, but also by about 30% between the ages of 25 and 71. The pressure diame

Convenient synthesis of benzene-1,3,5-tricarbaldehyde and congeners

A convenient synthesis of benzene-1,3,5-tricarbaldehyde was developed as well as benzaldehyde derivatives carrying one or two latent aldehyde groups. The asymmetric derivatives may serve as versatile scaffolds for the synthesis of sectorial dendrimers and multifunctional molecules.

The JastAdd system — modular extensible compiler construction

The JastAdd system enables modular specifications of extensible compiler tools and languages. Java has been extended with the Rewritable Circular Reference Attributed Grammars formalism that supports modularization and extensibility through several synergistic mechanisms. Object-orientation and static aspect-oriented programming are combined with declarative attributes and context-dependent rewrit

Self-desiccation and its importance in concrete technology : Proceedings of the second international research seminar in Lund, June 18, 1999.

Papers: - Early age chemical shrinkage and autogenous deformation of cement pastes. - Shrinkage of high-strength concrete at different ambient humidities. - A computer program to calculate drying of and desiccation in concrete. - Aspects of monitoring moisture changes using electrical impedance spectroscopy. - A Nordtest method for verification of self-desiccation in concrete. - Early age autogeno

Citizen Participation and Institutional Coordination: an examination of public transport and land use planning in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania.

This project is a continuation of the research project: Public transport in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania; institutional challenges and opportunities for a sustainable transport system carried out from 2003 to 2004. This study analyses mechanisms, forms for involvement and participation in planning for public transport. Questions asked are: How can participatory transport planning involving the supplier

The K-Cl cotransporter in the lobster stretch receptor neurone-a kinetic analysis.

Experiments were performed to define quantitatively the substrate (K(+) and Cl(-)) dependence of the transport function (production of equally large and oppositely directed K(+)and Cl(-) flows/currents) of an earlier (Theander et al., 1999) identified electroneutral K-Cl cotransporter in the slowly adapting stretch receptor neurone of the European lobster. The experiments were based on microelectr

TRIM22/Staf50 - a novel target gene of the tumor suppressor p53

Popular Abstract in Swedish Skulle p53-målgenen TRIM22 kunna skydda mot cancer uppkomst? Blodkropparna är specialiserade celler The tumor suppressor gene p53 is a transcription factor that mediates cell cycle arrest, apoptosis and differentiation. p53 mediated differentiation of leukemic cells depends on the transcriptional activity of p53 but so far no obvious differentiation inducing target gene has been identified. Using a cDNA microarray analysis, I identified TRIM22/Staf50 as a novel direct target gene to p53. The fun

Stability of voltage and frequency control in distributed generation based on parallel-connected converters feeding constant power loads

In this paper stability and dynamic properties of voltage and frequency droop control of power electronic converters are investigated for a distributed generation system. Droop control is utilized to share active and reactive power among the source converters. The voltage and frequency controllers are designed so that stand-alone converter operation feeding constant power loads performs satisfacto

Determination of protein diffusion coefficients in agarose gel with a diffusion cell

A diffusion cell has been used to measure the effective diffusion coefficients of proteins. The method is applied to lysozyme and BSA at different pH and ionic strength. A parameter optimization technique is used to estimate the diffusion coefficients directly from experimental data. The importance and influence of pH and ionic strength on the diffusive properties in an agarose gel have been demon

Modeling, Control and Optimization of a Plate Reactor

The plate reactor combines the high-heat-transfer capabilities of plate heat exchangers with the efficient mixing and reaction control typical of microreactors. With this new concept, highly exothermic reactions can be produced using more concentrated reactants an
