A new sample of massive B-type contact binary candidates from the OGLE survey of the Magellanic Clouds

Context. Massive contact binaries (CBs) are crucial objects for understanding close binary evolution and stellar mergers. Study of these objects has been hampered by a scarcity of observed systems, particularly of B-type systems which are expected to dominate this class. Aims. We bridge this observational gap by mining a large sample of massive CB candidates from the OGLE-IV database, potentially

Biodiversity, EU Pesticides Law, and Trade : Deconstructing World Trade Organization Delegates’ Concerns through a Human Rights Lens

The European Union (EU) is implementing unilateral trade restrictions on imports that contain residues of pesticides banned for use within its borders. Several Latin American (LA) countries, among other EU trading partners, have criticized these measures, leading to a contentious debate that could escalate into a trade dispute before the World Trade Organization (WTO). This article aims to unpack

Knowledge for policy in a transformative age : exploring the structural, operational and practice-oriented characteristics of innovation policy research organisations

This paper examines the evolving role of universities in transferring and developing knowledge to foster transformative Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) policy amid significant shifts in economic development landscapes. With a rising focus on geopolitics, defense, resilience, and disruptive technologies, universities are increasingly expected to engage and act as catalysts for sustainable

Coherent control of ionization via stabilization by resonant pulse pairs

We study the nonlinear and resonant process of two-photon ionization of atoms (He and H) in a pump-probe scheme. The pump pulse prepares the quantum system in a superposition of the ground state and an excited bound state. By varying the phase difference between the pulses, we show how it is possible to coherently control the dressed-state population during the probe pulse. Our main result is that

Large Eddy Simulation of Thermo-Acoustic Instabilities in Bluff-Body Stabilized Flames; A Comparison Between Jet-A and C1

Due to the threat climate change poses, the aviation industry needs to adapt. In the process to convert the aviation fleet into a more environmentally friendly fleet, using biofuels such as Sustainable Aviation Fuels as a drop-in fuel remains a promising option. To include biofuels, safety aspects need to be investigated, where combustion instabilities are important. Thermo-acoustic instabilities

Protecting Lithium Metal Electrode With Titanium Based Interphase : Synthesis and Battery Performance

Atomic layer deposition (ALD) of interphases is a promising strategy for stabilizing lithium metal negative electrode and mitigating dendrite formation in rechargeable batteries. In this work, we investigate the growth mechanism and electrochemical impact of titanium-based ALD coatings on highly reactive lithium surfaces. Operando ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (APXPS) was emplo

Unlocking green transitions : system-level agency in peripheral regions

This paper examines the role of system-level agency in shaping green transitions in peripheral regions. The comparative case study analysis of four peripheral regions in Germany reveals significant differences in capacities to address challenges, overcome dependencies and seize green opportunities. It showcases how intermediaries function as conducive actors that unlock regional transition process

Evaluating transitions and missions : it’s all about the theory

Innovation policies worldwide are shifting from promoting growth towards tackling transitions to make the economy and society more sustainable in the medium to long term. This means that policymakers need a change in mind-set, relying less on theories of innovation that focus on science-push to trigger individual innovations and more on theories of systems innovation that focus more on making enti

Atmospheric composition and circulation of the ultra-hot Jupiter WASP-121b with joint NIRPS, HARPS and CRIRES+ transit spectroscopy

Ultra-hot gas giants such as WASP-121b provide unique laboratories for exploring atmospheric chemistry and dynamics under extreme irradiation conditions. Uncovering their chemical composition and atmospheric circulation is critical for tracing planet formation pathways. Here, we present a comprehensive atmospheric characterisation of WASP-121b using high-resolution transit spectroscopy across the

Two warm Earth-sized exoplanets and an Earth-sized candidate in the M5V-M6V binary system TOI-2267

We report the discovery of two warm exoplanets orbiting the cool binary system TOI-2267, composed of the M5 (TOI-2267A) and M6 (TOI-2267B) stars, whose angular separation is 0.384 arcsec, corresponding to a projected distance of only about 8 au at 22 pc from the Solar System. To confirm the planetary nature of these objects, we combined photometry from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TE

Roadmap on deep learning for microscopy

Through digital imaging, microscopy has evolved from primarily being a means for visual observation of life at the micro- and nano-scale, to a quantitative tool with ever-increasing resolution and throughput. Artificial intelligence, deep neural networks, and machine learning (ML) are all niche terms describing computational methods that have gained a pivotal role in microscopy-based research over

FROM MYTHS TO TRANSFORMATION

In this chapter, the author synthesises insights from across the book to demonstrate how myths about sustainable consumption persist and hinder systemic change. The chapter identifies five mechanisms that explain their persistence: cultural reinforcement, anchoring in daily practices, institutional embedding, psychological appeal and political function. These mechanisms reveal why myths remain inf

Industry 5.0 through the lens of ergonomics and sustainability : mapping the territory

Digital technologies have revolutionized the manufacturing landscape, enhancing productivity, quality, and sustainability. Industry 5.0 emphasizes human–machine collaboration to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while prioritizing human centrality in technologically advanced systems. Therefore, Industry 5.0 signifies a paradigm shift from techno-centric to human-centric systems to a

“Approachen jag fick var, säg till ordinarie lärare så tar de det därifrån” - Grundskolevikariers erfarenheter av att orosanmäla barn som far illa

The protection of vulnerable children constitutes a fundamental legal and moral mandate within the Swedish school system. Yet, the specific role of substitute teachers in this process remains an under-researched area. Using Lipsky’s theory of street-level bureaucracy and Svedberg’s role theory concerning professional structures and role conflicts, we analyzed attitudes of unqualified primary schoo

Bildterapi i socialt arbete? Fyra yrkesverksamma bildterapeuter intervjuas om metodens möjligheter och hinder i en svensk kontext

Social work is largely characterised by verbal approaches, while many clients who come into contact with social services may have limited opportunities to express their experiences in words. This highlights the need for alternative and complementary methods, particularly for individuals with traumatic experiences, mental health problems, neurodevelopmental disabilities, or long-term social vulnera

Barns delaktighet i barnavårdsutredningar. En kvalitativ intervjustudie om hur socialsekreterarna ser på barns delaktighet avseende barnavårdsutredningar

This study focuses on children’s participation in child welfare investigations. Interviews were conducted with four child welfare caseworkers from the social services to understand how they view children’s participation and how they work to support it. The study aims to gain a better understanding of how caseworkers see children being involved, and what factors make it easier or more difficult for

“It’s a Huge Problem When There Is No Physical Violence”: A qualitative study exploring how practitioners assess predominantly non-physical IPV in an Australian and United Kingdom context.

This study has aimed to explore how domestic violence service practitioners assess cases of predominantly non-physical violence against women in intimate partner relationships. The study examined practitioners in South England, United Kingdom, and New South Wales, Australia, adopting a generic purposive sampling. A qualitative approach was applied, using semi-structured interviews guided by a vign

En kvalitativ studie om socialsekreterares arbetsförhållanden och upplevelser av stress i arbetet

This qualitative study has examined the experiences of work-related stress among Swedish social workers working in human-service organizations. The purpose of this study was to investigate the working conditions of social workers and how these impact their experiences of stress at the workplace. The purpose was also to identify preventative measures for work-related stress. The study uses a qualit
