Experiences of (in)security: An analysis of the Women, Peace and Security agenda

The Women, Peace and Security agenda (WPS) argues for women’s rights and recognition of women’s situations in all stages of a conflict. Previous research has shown how refugee women seem to be overlooked in international legislation. Existing research considering the WPS agenda has mainly focused on issues of implementation and discourses. This study aims to explore how conceptualizations of secur

(im)Politeness and Honorification, in Japanese Translation

In this thesis the translation of (im)politeness and honorification from Japanese is examined. Due to the different and complex politeness system in Japanese compared to European languages, difficulties rise in translating texts containing it. The goal of this thesis is to analyze the strategies used and the outcome, while comparing the translations of the novel Norwegian Wood made to three differ

Målningars påverkan av samhällsprocesser

The paper is about how society effects art when society goes through different social processes. The study is limited to the period referred to as the Vasa era and to paintings. What is meant with Vasa era is the 16th century. During that period, society goes through a social centralization in Europe and the question arises if this is, or becomes, noticeable in the art. This is another angle on so

On the Non-Existence of Compact Lorentzian Manifolds with Constant Positive Curvature

In this Master's Thesis we study Semi-Riemannian Geometry. More speci cally, this is done by discussing some well-known classi cation theorems from Riemannian geometry and then showing some counter-examples to these in the semi-Riemannian setting. In particular, we brie y discuss the theorem by Hopf and Rinow, and give a counter-example to this in the semi-Riemannian setting. Moreover, we stud

Child Care Services and Female Labour Force Participation; Did Sure Start increase Female Labour force participation in the most deprived areas in the United Kingdom 2003-2007?

In 1997 the UK government launched the Sure Start early year’s intervention scheme, offering early years education, health services, adult employment advice and free or highly subsidised child care located in one convenient service available to the most deprived areas. The aim was to improve the life chances of the most disadvantaged children, but also to increase employment for mothers of young c

“De kanske inte skadar en men det känns inte tryggt, det är svårt att förklara”. En kvalitativ studie om den upplevda tryggheten hos boende i bostadsområdet Hjällbo i Angered, Göteborg.

In 2013 the Swedish Police authority and district administration in Angered, a district in Gothenburg, initiated the operation Trygg i Angered with the aim to increase the safety of the residents. Based on security studies from the years 2013-2015 illegal and reckless driving of mopeds has been a major security problem in Angered. The municipality has targeted action on illegal and reckless drivin

Framework for district heating optimization

The objective of this thesis was to develop a flexible optimization framework for district heating networks (DHN) and to introduce pressure in the network models. This was done by creating a network represen- tation (NR) of the networks using the Python package NetworkX. Each node represents a customer or producer and the lines between the nodes are the corresponding pipes. The method of the proj

Exploring the Occupational Mismatch in Spain (1990s-2013)

This research aims to give a thorough look at the incidence, and evolution of occupational mismatch in the Spanish labor market from the 1990s till 2013. This is done by examining which parts of the labor market have been exhibiting this feature, and what the odds are of being mismatched, given individual characteristics. Two, large micro-data surveys were used; the Wage Structure Survey (WSS) and

From Refugees to Citizens: What Happens to Livelihoods? – A Study of How New Tanzanians Utilize Their Citizen Rights

För drygt 40 år sedan kom en stor grupp flyktingar till Tanzania från Burundi. Om man räknar in barn och barnbarn omfattar den här gruppen idag ungefär 200,000 personer. I oktober 2014 blev de medborgare i Tanzania. Min studie undersöker vilken skillnad det gjort för några av dessa personer att bli medborgare jämfört med att vara flyktingar när det kommer till deras levnadssituation och möjligheteThe purpose of this study was to find out how attaining citizenship had affected livelihood opportunities and strategies among the approximately 200,000 Burundian refugees who after more than 40 years in exile became Tanzanian citizens in late 2014. It is a case study of local integration and development, analysing the situation for new Tanzanian citizens through the sustainable livelihoods framew

Local pollution and the risks of OPFR, PBDE and PFAS to the marine ecosystem outside Longyearbyen and Barentsburg in Svalbard

Men den största anledningen till förekomsten av dessa ämnen är utsläpp av orenat avloppsvatten och läckage från sMost of the ecotoxicological research conducted in the Arctic until today has focused on long range transport of pollutants, while fewer studies on local pollution have been published. The aim of this study was hence to investigate if local pollution of organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and perfluorinated alkylated substances (PFAS) occurs outside tw

Characterization of Cell Death Pathways after Allergen Challenge and Viral-induced Asthma Exacerbation

Introduction: Asthma is a chronic inflammatory lung disease, which are associated with airflow obstructions. Asthma exacerbations are commonly caused by respiratory viral infections and lack efficient treatment options. Rhinovirus-induced exacerbations have been characterized by occurrence of necrotic cells, which may cause pathogenic effects. We hypothesized that house dust mite (HDM)-induced all

The neural basis of nocturnal migration – generating an average-shape brain of the Bogong moth

The long-distance migration that some animals accomplish can be truly astonishing. It can be observed in several different groups of animals with some of the most famous examples being sea turtles, birds, salmon and the Monarch butterfly. How these animals manage to navigate over distances sometimes as long as 10000 km nobody knows for sure. There is evidence of some animal’s ability to navigate u

From avengers to heroines: muslim*women dismantling hegemonic discourses

Hegemonic European discourses about muslim*women reduce the complex living realities of muslim*women to the singular of the gendered and racialized other. This thesis investigates the hegemonic functioning of these discourses and explores postcolonial and queer theoretical approaches for dismantling it. Employing Mouffe and Laclau’s discourse analysis newspaper articles from seven European countri

The effects of cash benefits on poverty - a panel study of 18 OECD countries

Methods of poverty eliminations are some of the most researched subjects in development, as well as, public economics. Procedures in which poverty is believed to be best fought have, and will continue to, deviate across countries. In this thesis, the linkages between poverty, elementary macroeconomic variables and cash benefits will be examined. To explore the direct as well as indirect effects on

Health Aid, Health Results? The impact of targeted foreign aid and institutional quality on infant mortality

Most previous research on foreign aid has examined the links between aid and economic growth, with tenuous results. I endeavour to estimate the impact of health aid on the health level in the recipient country, proxied by the change in the infant mortality rate, as well as examine what other country-specific factors that affect the efficiency of health aid. My results are in line with my hypothesi

Studies of putative interaction partners for the cell polarity determinant DivIVA in Streptomyces coelicolor

Förutom deras produktion av antibiotika så har streptomyceterna en unik livsStreptomyces species are filamentous bacteria from the phylum Actinobacteria in which cell elongation occurs at the poles of the cell. This differs from many other bacteria like Escherichia coli where cell elongation occurs by insertion of peptidoglycan in the lateral wall. An essential protein for polar growth in Streptomyces is the coil-coiled protein DivIVA. DivIVA has an essential role in orch

Income Growth and Import Competition: The Case of Swedish Municipalities

Income inequalities in developed nations are increasing and the issues of cause, effect and long run implications are currently being discussed and explored by economists and policymakers around the world. This thesis adds to the discussion by exploring income growth in Sweden; a country known for its equality and egalitarian society, yet has become one of the countries where income inequality is

Do stock-level liquidity shocks predict stock returns? - Evidence from the Swedish stock market

Adopting a methodology similar to Bali, Peng, Shen and Tang (2014), this essay investigates whether stock-level liquidity shocks predict future returns on the Swedish stock market. Liquidity is measured by the relative bid-ask spread. Portfolios with stocks that experienced positive liquidity shocks yield higher returns than portfolios with stocks that experienced negative liquidity shocks. The me

Optimization of human mesenchymal stem cells isolation quality assessment from adipose tissue for clinical application

Use of stem cells from fat tissue for clinical application Stem cells isolated from fat tissue (Adipose Stem Cells, ASC) are desired therapeutic agents due to their good accessibility, high yield, ease of isolation, and their growth and differentiation capabilities. Under long-term in vitro culturing, cells lose their capabilities to grow and divide, and acquire an aging (senescent) morphology. S

Taxation on labor income - A choice between efficiency and inequality?

This thesis applies a model for optimal top taxation rate on all Scandinavian countries. The starting point is a theory by Saez, Piketty and Stantcheva limiting the possible change in behavior of taxpayers into three channels; labor supply, tax avoidance and compensation bargaining. I show that optimal top taxation rate depends on these three key elasticities and how they affect the tax system. Th
