The Electoral Consequences of Nuclear Fallout: Evidence from Chernobyl

What are the political effects of a nuclear accident? Following the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, environmentalist parties were elected to parliaments in several nations. This paper uses Chernobyl as a natural experiment creating variation in radioactive fallout exposure over Sweden. I match municipality-level data on cesium ground contamination with election results for the anti-nuclear Green Party, w

Search for new non-resonant phenomena in high-mass dilepton final states with the ATLAS detector

A search for a chargino-neutralino pair decaying via the 125 GeV Higgs boson into photons is presented. The study is based on the data collected between 2015 and 2018 with the ATLAS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb−1 of pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. No significant excess over the expected background is observed. Upper limits at 95% conf

Posttraumatic Symptoms in 3–7 Year Old Trauma‑Exposed Children: Links to Impairment, Other Mental Health Symptoms, Caregiver PTSD, and Caregiver Stress

Few studies have examined how PTSD symptoms in young children are associated with other mental health symptoms and mood and functioning in caregivers. This is an important gap in the literature as such knowledge may be important for assessment and treatment. This study used network analysis to identify how the major symptom domains of PTSD in young trauma-exposed children were related to impairmen

Cultures in Conflict : Religion, History and Gender in Northern Europe c. 1800–2000

This book includes studies of main conflict areas in modern Western societies where religion has been a central element, ranging from popular movements and narratives of opposition to challenges of religious satire and anti-clerical critique. Special attention is given to matters of politics and gender. With this theme, it provides a useful guide to conflict areas in modern European religious hist

Catholic Celebrities, Religious Commodities and Commotions in the Light of Swedish Anti-Catholicism

In the Protestant tradition the trade and commerce that surrounded different aspects of Catholic spirituality was regarded as something relatively alien. In Protestant Sweden the critique towards these aspects of Catholicism became an essential component in the anti-Catholic rhetoric that was recurring during the latter nineteenth and the early twentieth century. From the perspective of Lutheran t

The Role of the Qods Force in the Foreign Policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran

The establishment of the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI) in 1979 had a great impact on the question of security in both the region and outside of the Middle East. The foreign policy of the new republic would show hostility and aggression as terrorism became its modus operandi. In order to safeguard the newly established regime and the revolution, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (Pasdaran) was

Bark beetles as lidar targets and prospects of photonic surveillance

Forestry is raising concern about the outbreaks of European spruce bark beetle, Ips typographus, causing extensive damage to the spruce forest and timber values. Precise monitoring of these beetles is a necessary step towards preventing outbreaks. Current commercial monitoring methods are catch‐based and lack in both temporal and spatial resolution. In this work, light scattering from beetles is c

Whose Cultural Memory? : Disruptive Tactics by the Creative Collectives in George Town, Malaysia

This chapter examines everyday lived experiences of individuals and groups from various creative collectives in George Town, Malaysia. The process of these articulations is explored through their everyday dwelling in this city, especially in responding to the so-called official narrative of creative city within heritage context. This chapter aims to understand how the everyday tactics of creative

The Call of *Yaqtulu : The Central Semitic Imperfective, Nominalisation and Verbal Semantics in Cyclical Flux

The article discusses the discrepancy between the *yaqattal and *yaqtulu imperfectives (the former known from East Semitic, Ethiosemitic and Modern South Arabian and the latter from Central Semitic). It argues that original nominalised phrases such as “he is a killer” came about based on an earlier “he is one who killed”, and that these were subsequently reinterpreted as imperfectives. A compariso

Durable and highly proton conducting poly(arylene perfluorophenylphosphonic acid) membranes

Phosphonated aromatic polymers show several important advantages as proton exchange membranes (PEMs), including high thermal and chemical stability. However, the conductivity needs to be significantly enhanced for most electrochemical applications. Here, we have prepared a series poly(p-terphenyl perfluoroalkylene)s functionalized with highly acidic perfluorophenylphosphonic acid by first carrying

Thermoresponsive Glycopolymers Based on Enzymatically Synthesized Oligo-β-Mannosyl Ethyl Methacrylates and N-Isopropylacrylamide

We here present a series of thermoresponsive glycopolymers in the form of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-co-(2-[β-manno[oligo]syloxy] ethyl methacrylate)s. These copolymers were prepared from oligo-β-mannosyl ethyl methacrylates that were synthesized through enzymatic catalysis, and were subsequently investigated with respect to their aggregation and phase behavior in aqueous solution using a combina

Highly conductive hydroxide exchange membranes containing fluorene-units tethered with dual pairs of quaternary piperidinium cations

In the pursuit of anion exchange membranes (AEMs) with high alkaline stability and hydroxide conductivity, we have prepared and characterized a series of poly(fluorene alkylene)s in which each fluorene unit was functionalized with dual pairs of quaternary piperidinium cations on flexible alkyl spacer chains. First, ether-free precursor polymers were synthesized in superacid mediated polyhydroxyalk

Synthesis and melt-spinning of partly bio-based thermoplastic poly(cycloacetal-urethane)s toward sustainable textiles

A rigid diol with a cyclic acetal structure was synthesized by facile acetalation of fructose-based 5-hydroxymethyl furfural (HMF) and partly bio-based di-trimethylolpropane (di-TMP). This diol (Monomer T) was copolymerized with potentially biobased flexible polytetrahydrofuran and diisocyanates to prepare thermoplastic poly(cycloacetal-urethane)s. A modified one step solution polymerization proto

Biobased aliphatic polyesters from a spirocyclic dicarboxylate monomer derived from levulinic acid

Levulinic acid derived from lignocellulose is an important biobased building block chemical. Here, we report on the synthesis and polymerization of a rigid spirocyclic diester monomer to produce polyesters and copolyesters. The monomer was prepared via a one-step acid catalyzed ketalization involving ethyl levulinate and pentaerythritol by employing a straightforward, solvent-free, and readily sca
