Platelet activation and tissue factor release in hemolytic uremic syndrome
Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) is a clinical syndrome characterized by microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia and acute renal failure. There are two subtypes: typical HUS associated with enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) and atypical HUS associated with uninhibited activation of the alternative pathway of complement. EHEC produce virulence factors such as lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and
Graphene coatings for chemotherapy: avoiding silver-mediated degradation
Chemotherapy treatment usually involves the delivery of fluorouracil (5-Fu) together with other drugs through central venous catheters. Catheters and their connectors are increasingly treated with silver or argentic alloys/compounds. Complications arising from broken catheters are common, leading to additional suffering for patients and increased medical costs. Here, we uncover a likely cause of s

On ASLA
The Swedish Association for Applied Linguistics, ASLA (Association suédoise de linguistique appliquée) was formally founded as an autonomous Swedish affiliate of AILA in 1966. The constituting meeting was held at Lund University on April 12, 1966 during which the first chairperson, Professor Bertil Malmberg, was elected. This means that ASLA will be celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2016. Howeve
Measurement of the branching ratio Gamma(Lambda(0)(b) -> Psi(2S)Lambda(0))/Gamma(Lambda(0.)(b) -> J/Psi Lambda(0)) with the ATLAS detector
An observation of the Lambda(0)(b) -> Psi (2S) Lambda(0) decay and a comparison of its branching fraction with that of the Lambda(0)(b) -> Psi (2S) Lambda(0) decay has been made with the ATLAS detector in proton-proton collisions at root s = 8 TeVat the LHC using an integrated luminosity of 20.6fb(-1). The J/Psi and Psi(2S) mesons are reconstructed in their decays to a muon pair, while the Lambda(
Suppression of away-side jet fragments with respect to the reaction plane in Au plus Au collisions at root s(NN)=200 GeV
Pair correlations between large transverse momentum neutral pion triggers (p(T) = 4-7 GeV/c) and charged hadron partners (p(T) = 3-7 GeV/c) in central (0%-20%) and midcentral (20%-60%) Au + Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV are presented as a function of trigger orientation with respect to the reaction plane. The particles are at larger momentum than where jet shape modifications have been obs
The role of different reproductive barriers during phenotypic divergence of isopod ecotypes.
The question of how diverging populations become separate species by restraining gene flow is a central issue in evolutionary biology. Assortative mating might emerge early during adaptive divergence, but the role of other types of reproductive barriers such as migration modification have recently received increased attention. We demonstrate that two recently diverged ecotypes of a freshwater isop
Search for lepton flavour violation at HERA
A search for second and third generation scalar and vector leptoquarks produced in ep collisions via the lepton flavour violating processes ep -> mu X and ep -> tau X is performed by the H1 experiment at HERA. The full data sample taken at a centre-of-mass energy root s = 319 GeV is used for the analysis, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 245 pb(-1) of e(+)p and 166 pb(-1) of e(-)p coll

Genetic variants and the risk of type 2 diabetes
Insulin stimuleraType 2 diabetes is rapidly increasing worldwide thereby posing a severe burden on individual and public health. Although this increase can be ascribed to both genetic and environmental factors, until 2007, the genetic factors have been largely restricted to a few candidate genes based upon our limited knowledge of the pathogenesis of the disease. In an attempt to identify underlying genetic loci,
Fruit and vegetable intake and mortality from ischaemic heart disease: results from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC)-Heart study
Aims A higher intake of fruits and vegetables has been associated with a lower risk of ischaemic heart disease (IHD), but there is some uncertainty about the interpretation of this association. The objective was to assess the relation between fruit and vegetable intake and risk of mortality from IHD in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC)-Heart study. Methods and
Health-related quality of life in family members of patients with an advanced cancer diagnosis: A one-year prospective study
Background: Receiving a cancer diagnosis affects family members as well as the person diagnosed. Family members often provide support for the sick person in daily life out of duty and love, and may not always think of their own vulnerability to illness. To individualise support for them, family members who are most at risk for becoming ill must be identified. The aim of this study was to investiga
High plasma concentrations of autoantibodies against native peptide 210 of apoB-100 are related to less coronary atherosclerosis and lower risk of myocardial infarction
Aims We examined whether antibodies against peptides 45 and 210 of apoB-100 are related to myocardial infarction (MI) and severity of coronary atherosclerosis. Methods and results Three hundred and eighty-seven survivors of a first MI (aged < 60 years) and 387 sex- and age-matched controls were characterized in detail. IgG and IgM autoantibodies against native and malondialdehyde (MDA)-modified pe
Intrinsic Ligand Effect Governing the Catalytic Activity of Pd Oxide Thin Films
High-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and density functional theory calculations have been combined to study methane oxidation over Pd(100). The measurements reveal a high activity when a two-layer PdO(101) oriented film is formed. Although a one-layer PdO(101) film exhibits a similar surface structure, no or very little activity is observed. The calculations show that

Genetic Variations in Sex Steroid-Related Genes as Predictors of Serum Estrogen Levels in Men
Context: The risk of many conditions, including prostate cancer, breast cancer, and osteoporosis, is associated with serum levels of sex steroids. Objective: The aim of the study was to identify genetic variations in sex steroid-related genes that are associated with serum levels of estradiol (E2) and/or testosterone in men. Design: Genotyping of 604 single nucleotide polymorphisms in 50 sex stero
Death (in the Eye) of the Beholder : An Encounter with Victorian Post-mortem Photography
This article deals with the earliest version of post-mortem photography concentrating on the effects of such pictures on the present-day viewer. The encounter with these artefacts begins from a phenomenological point of view as I try to describe my personal experience of coming face to face with the image. I claim that the relation between the perceiver and the photograph does not just simply chan
Urachal signet-cell adenocarcinoma
This report presents two cases of urachal signet-cell adenocarcinoma (USCA). Two men, aged 53 and 51 years, presented with haematuria. Cystoscopy showed tumours in the dome of the bladder and transurethral resection revealed signet ring cell carcinoma. They both underwent cystoprostatectomy but died of metastatic disease after 14 and 26 months. USCA is a very rare tumour with poor prognosis. Only
