Longitudinal trends in good self-rated health: effects of age and birth cohort in a 25-year follow-up study in Sweden.
Although average life expectancy has increased considerably in Sweden, there is less evidence for improved self-rated health (SRH). We analyzed longitudinal trends in SRH between 1980/1981 and 2004/2005 in age and birth cohort subgroups.
Au10Mo4Zn89: A Fully Ordered Complex Intermetallic Compound Analyzed by TOPOS.
The compound Au10Mo4Zn89 has been synthesized, and its structure has been analyzed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The compound crystallizes in cubic space group F4̅3m (No. 216) with a unit cell that contains 412 atoms. The structure is largely tetrahedrally closely packed, but an octahedral arrangement of atoms is incompatible with tetrahedral close packing. The structure of the ordered Au10
Adsorption of ammonia on multilayer iron phthalocyanine.
The adsorption of ammonia on multilayers of well-ordered, flat-lying iron phthalocyanine (FePc) molecules on a Au(111) support was investigated by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. We find that the electron-donating ammonia molecules coordinate to the metal centers of iron phthlalocyanine. The coordination of ammonia induces changes of the electronic structure of the iron phthalocyanine layer, whi
Nutritional status in patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis and a study of the effects of zinc supplementation together with antimony treatment.
The role of micronutrient status for the incidence and clinical course of cutaneous leishmaniasis is not much studied. Still zinc supplementation in leishmaniasis has shown some effect on the clinical recovery, but the evidence in humans is limited.
Immigrants and Preterm Births: A Nationwide Epidemiological Study in Sweden.
To examine, nationwide, if there is an association between country of birth in mothers and preterm birth and to study whether any such association remains in second-generation immigrant women. In this follow-up study, a nationwide research database located at Lund University, Sweden, was used to identify all preterm born singletons in Sweden between January 1, 1982, and December 31, 2006. Incidenc
Investigation by Combined Solid-State NMR and SAXS Methods of the Morphology and Domain Size in Polystyrene-b-Polyethylene Oxide-b-Polystyrene Triblock Copolymers
The microphase structure of a series of polystyrene-b-polyethylene oxide-b-polystyrene (SEOS) triblock copolymers with different compositions and molecular weights has been studied by solid-state NMR, DSC, wide and small angle X-ray scattering (WAXS and SAXS). WAXS and DSC measurements were used to detect the presence of crystalline domains of polyethylene-oxide (PEO) blocks at room temperature as
Ultrafast Responsive Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) Gel Produced by Cryostructuring of Self-crosslinkable Polymer Microgels
A macroporous material composed of closely aggregated particles was prepared by cryostructuration of N-isopropylacrylamide-co-N-hydroxymethylacrylamide (NIPA-co-HMAm) particle suspensions. The formed structure was maintained by the formation of covalent bonds through self-crosslinking between the particles while the system was in a semi-frozen state thus avoiding the need to freeze-dry the sample.
Environmental correlates of annual survival differ between two ecologically similar and congeneric owls
Understanding how survival is affected by the environment is essential to gain insight into population dynamics and the evolution of life-history traits as well as to identify environmental selection pressures. However, we still have little understanding of the relative effect of different environmental factors and their interactions on demographic traits and population dynamics. Here we used two
Panel cointegration tests of the sustainability hypothesis in rich OECD countries
This study reexamines the sustainability hypothesis by testing whether government revenues and expenditures for eight rich OECD countries between 1977Q1 and 2005Q4 are cointegrated. For this purpose, a nonstationary panel data approach is adopted, which is general enough to permit for cross-country dependence as well as structural breaks representing major shifts in fiscal policy. In contrast to m
Morbidity and mortality in gynecological cancers among first- and second-generation immigrants in Sweden
We studied the effect of new environment on the risk in and mortality of gynecological cancers in first- and second-generation immigrants in Sweden. We used the nationwide Swedish Family-Cancer Database to calculate standardized incidence/mortality ratios (SIRs/SMRs) of cervical, endometrial and ovarian cancers among immigrants in comparison to the native Swedes. Risk of cervical cancer increased
Similar appearance, different mechanisms: xerosis in HIV, atopic dermatitis and ageing
Xerosis is one of the most common dermatologic disorders occurring in the elderly and in patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Xerosis has been linked to an impaired skin barrier function of the stratum corneum. Using Raman microspectroscopy, we concentrated on deeper skin layers, viable epidermis and dermis of 47 volunteers and associated molecular
Foundations of Santilli's Lie-Isotopic Theory
The need and benefits of new universal mathematical and especially algebraic and operator structures and methods in all branches and levels of modem physics from experiments to fundamentals is nowdays widely recognized. The far reaching pioneering discoveries of R. M. Santilli extend significantly the Lie analysis and operator methods and models of modem physics opening new areas of applications w
Improving operational land surface model canopy evapotranspiration in Africa using a direct remote sensing approach
Climate change is expected to have the greatest impact on the world's economically poor. In the Sahel, a climatically sensitive region where rain-fed agriculture is the primary livelihood, expected decreases in water supply will increase food insecurity. Studies on climate change and the intensification of the water cycle in sub-Saharan Africa are few. This is due in part to poor calibration of mo
The cerebrospinal fluid "Alzheimer profile": Easily said, but what does it mean?
We aimed to identify the most useful definition of the "cerebrospinal fluid Alzheimer profile," based on amyloid-ß1-42 (Aβ42), total tau, and phosphorylated tau (p-tau), for diagnosis and prognosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD).
A Reference Architecture for Service-oriented Control Procedures and its Implementation with SysML and Grafchart
Innovative engineering methods are needed to enhance the adaptability and agility of industrial control procedures and concurrently manage their rising complexity. Service-oriented Architecture (SOA) constitutes a promising paradigm to meet these challenges. To apply the rather abstract SOA principles to industrial automation, a model-driven engineering method is presented in this paper. Therefore
The desired competence of the Swedish ambulance nurse according to the professionals - A Delphi study.
Nursing is evolving into new fields of health care including ambulance care, where a branch of specialist nursing is growing. Various views exist on the desired competence for the ambulance nurse and valid guidelines are lacking in Sweden. To increase knowledge of the field, professionals were asked to describe what competences an ambulance nurse should possess. The aim of this study was therefore
Inflammatory markers and risk of epithelial ovarian cancer by tumor subtypes: the EPIC cohort.
Evidence suggests an etiologic role for inflammation in ovarian carcinogenesis and heterogeneity between tumor subtypes and anthropometric indices. Prospective studies on circulating inflammatory markers and epithelial invasive ovarian cancer (EOC) have predominantly investigated overall risk; data characterizing risk by tumor characteristics (histology, grade, stage, dualistic model of ovarian ca
SEC enforcement in the PIPE market: Actions and consequences
In 2002, the SEC launched enforcement actions against investors involved in PIPE (Private Investments in Public Equity) transactions. We describe the legal ramifications of this enforcement initiative, and document dramatic contemporaneous market-wide changes in the contractual structure of PIPEs. PIPEs in the post-action period included fewer aggressive repricing rights and more trading restricti
Scientific dishonesty--questionnaire to doctoral students in Sweden.
'Scientific dishonesty' implies the fabrication, falsification or plagiarism in proposing, performing or reviewing research or in reporting research results. A questionnaire was given to postgraduate students at the medical faculties in Sweden who attended a course in research ethics during the academic year 2008/2009 and 58% answered (range 29%-100%). Less than one-third of the respondents wrote
