This paper examines demand for and access to private-sector extension services by contracted cotton producers in northern Tanzania. Data from a non-random survey of 520 smallholders show that only 21.9% received any extension and only 4.6% received extension from the cotton ginnery. Wealthier households were three times more likely to receive extension from any provider. While the public sector re
Landscape, process and economy in the bloomery iron production during AD400–1000 are all integrated in this paper initiated by an archaeological excavation of a bloomery site in Motala in Östergötland, southeast Sweden. This site is one among other contemporaneous sites with similar features, such as long-term iron production and a location in the landscape within easy reach of communication routeLandscape, process and economy in the bloomery iron production during AD 400–1000 are all integrated in this paper initiated by an archaeological exca-vation of a bloomery site in Motala in Östergötland, southeast Sweden. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease with unknown etiology. Here we show the generation of an induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) line, named CSC-40, from dermal fibroblasts obtained from a 59-year-old male patient with a homozygous p.Q456X mutation in the PTEN-induced putative kinase 1 (PINK/PARK6) gene and a confirmed diagnosis of PD, which could be used to model familial PD.
Hydrogen functionalization of graphene by exposure to vibrationally excited H2 molecules is investigated by combined scanning tunneling microscopy, high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements, and density functional theory calculations. The measurements reveal that vibrationally excited H2 molecules dissociatively adsorb on graphene on Ir(111) r
This paper reports an experimental study, where the reduction of NiO-GDC to Ni-GDC is monitored using high temperature (HT) near ambient pressure (NAP) X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) in combination with simultaneous impedance spectroscopy (IS). The experiment is carried out using a dual chamber (DC)-HT-NAP-XPS cell designed for membrane electrode studies. The dual chamber measurement cell
A rigid-body model of a finger interacting with a trackball is considered. The proposed system is a suitable candidate for studying trajectory generation when interaction plays an important role, such as in assembly and manipulation tasks. The mathematical model consists of a ball with a spherical joint constraint, a finger with three degrees of freedom, and the Coulomb friction model. From first
This study explores the relationship between dietary patterns and social structure in a pre-industrial mining community in Salberget, Sweden c. 1470 to 1600 A.D. using a combination of different research approaches and tools, including archaeology, osteology, bone chemistry and history. The correlation between demographic criteria (sex and age) and archaeological variables (burial type and burial l
The aim of the current study was to establish conversion coefficients (CCs) from dose-area product to effective dose for most common barium meal (BM) fluoroscopic examination. The study was based on data collection in two X-ray rooms in a major university hospital in St-Petersburg, Russia that allowed evaluating a structure of BM fluoroscopic examinations and developing a computed model of effecti
Adsorption of NO on Fe3O4(111) is studied by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. NO is preferably adsorbed atop the octahedral site which has a clearly higher adsorption energy than the tetrahedral site. The difference in adsorption energy correlates with differences in adsorption geometries and N–O stretch vibrations. The results are in good agreement with temperature programmed desorpt
Galectin-3 is an endogenous β-galactoside-binding lectin comprising a carbohydrate recognition domain (CRD) linked to a collagen-like N-domain. Both domains are required for galectin-3 to induce cellular effects; a C-terminal fragment of galectin-3, galectin-3C, containing the CRD but lacking the N-domain, binds cell surface glycoconjugates but does not induce cellular effects since cross-linking
Amphiphilic in nature, lipids spontaneously self-assemble into a range of nanostructures in the presence of water. Among lipid self-assembled structures, liposomes and supported lipid bilayers have long held scientific interest for their main applications in drug delivery and plasma membrane models, respectively. In contrast, lipid-based multilayered membranes on solid supports only recently begin
Microstructure and mechanical properties of bulk polycrystalline rhombohedral boron sub-nitride B13N2 synthesized by crystallization from the B–BN melt at 7 GPa have been systematically studied by micro- and nanoindentation, atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The obtained data on hardness, elastic properties and fracture toughness clearly indicate that B13N2 belongs to a fam
Transition narratives are stories promoting particular pathways for development, promoting specific actions, strategies, and interventions to enable certain outcomes in socio-technical transitions. Narratives centered around biorefineries take a significant role in the growing bioeconomy discourse, yet they express remarkably different visions for the transition. The paper uses Q methodology to id
Saturated pool boiling heat transfer is investigated experimentally on a copper substrate with copper nanoparticle coatings at atmospheric pressure, in terms of critical heat flux (CHF) and heat transfer coefficient (HTC). Experiments are carried out on the substrate surface with a diameter of 12 mm using DI water as the working fluid. The coating is formed by stacking copper nanoparticles generat
