Interleukin-6-deficient mice develop mature-onset obesity
The immune-modulating cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6) its expressed both in adipose tissue and centrally in hypothalamic nuclei that regulate body composition. We investigated the impact of loss of IL-6 on body composition in mice lacking the gene encoding IL-6 (116(-/-) mice) and found that they developed mature-onset obesity that was partly reversed by IL-6 replacement: The obese 116(-/-) mice had
Microstructure analysis of novel resorbable calcium phosphate/sulphate bone cements
This paper presents a new method to obtain porosity in apatitic cements, by mixing a-tricalcium phosphate (alpha-TCP) with calcium sulphate hemihydrate. The material was characterized by X-ray diffraction and observations in Electron Microscopy. The results show that crystals of calcium sulphate stayed embedded in the hydroxyapatite formed from a-TCP. By dissolution of these crystals porosity coul

Skalmur med träregelstomme (informationsskrift i serien: Fuktsäkerhet i byggnader)
Skalmur med bakomliggande träregelstomme är idag en av de vanligaste yttervägskonstruktionerna i Sverige. I allmänhet fungerar konstruktionen bra. Det finns dock många exempel på skador som beror på brister i fuktsäkerheten. I denna skrift beskrivs olika fuktbelastningar och vilka problem som kan uppstå. Varje detalj i konstruktionen beskrivs ur fuktteknisk synvinkel. Olika åtgärder för att förbä

Optimal signaling and selection verification for single transmit-antenna selection
In marked contrast with the ideal error-free feedback assumption that is common in the literature, practical systems are likely to have severely bandwidth-limited, error-prone feedback channels. We consider the scenario where feedback from the receiver is used by the transmitter to select the best antenna, out of many available antennas, for data transmission. Feedback errors cause the transmitter
Effects of inhibition of glycation and oxidative stress on the development of diabetic nephropathy in rats.
We investigated whether aminoguanidine (AG), an inhibitor of advanced glycated end product formation, or probucol (PB), a free radical scavenger, could influence signs of glomerular and distal tubular function and morphological changes in kidneys of male Wistar rats after 6 months of streptozocin (STZ)-induced diabetes. Diabetic rats had a higher kidney weight/body weight ratio (P
A new system for photon induced fluorescence spectroscopy applied to the study of doubly excited states of helium
A new system for photon induced fluorescence spectroscopy (PIFS) at the gas phase photoemission beamline (Elettra, Trieste) is described. It consists of a novel non-dispersive detector for VUV photons and a spectrometer for UV/visible light with cooled CCD detector. To illustrate the performance of the apparatus, the fluorescence decay of the doubly excited states of helium below the N = 2 ionizat
Ethanol from Softwood - Techno-Economic Evaluation for Development of the Enzymatic Process
Popular Abstract in Swedish Etanol som produceras från förnyelsebara råvaror kan ersätta fossila bränslen som t.ex. bensin och diesel. Denna avhandling behandlar den enzymatiska processen för etanolproduktion från barrträd. Baserat på datorprogrammen Aspen Plus och Icarus Process Evaluator har ett verktyg för tekniska och ekonomiska beräkningar tagits fram i vilket hela processen, från trä till etEthanol produced from renewable resources can be used to replace fossil fuels such as gasoline and diesel. This thesis deals with the development of the enzymatic process used for ethanol production from softwood. A techno-economic tool, based on Aspen Plus and Icarus Process Evaluator, was developed in which the whole process, from raw material to ethanol, was studied and critical process paramet

The 'antiporter module' of respiratory chain Complex I includes the MrpC/NuoK subunit - a revision of the modular evolution scheme
Respiratory chain Complex I or NADH:quinone oxidoreductase catalyzes oxidation of NADH in the mitochondrial matrix or bacterial cytoplasm and reduction of quinone in the membrane, coupled to pumping of 4H+/2e- across the membrane. The same enzyme complex is also capable of the reverse reaction, i.e. @D@mH+-supported NAD+ reduction. The molecular mechanism that couples electron transfer to proton p

At present, when economy and environment receive high priority, the ideal anaesthesia system with inhalation anaesthetics is a closed circle system in which only the gases which the patient consumes or produces are replaced or eliminated. Low-flow (LF) anaesthesia in which the fresh gas flow which is employed in a closed system, provides a stable system compares with closed anaesthesia systems. Co
Influence of the initial composition of algal-bacterial microcosms on the degradation of salicylate in a fed-batch culture
The influence of the initial composition of an algal-bacterial microcosm constituted of Chlorella sorokiniana and Ralstonia basilensis was tested for the fed-batch degradation of salicylate at 5 mM. Salicylate degradation was always limited by the O-2 generation rate, which was initially proportional to the algal density, but rapidly became limited by the availability of light once the algae start
Lipoproteins and metabolic control in hypertensive type II diabetics treated with clonidine
Twenty patients with type II diabetes mellitus and hypertension (WHO stages I and II) participated in a 3-month double-blind cross-over study to evaluate the effects of clonidine (75-300 micrograms daily) on blood pressure, glycemic control and plasma lipoproteins. Already after 1 month's treatment with clonidine the systolic and diastolic blood pressures had decreased, from 168/103 to 161/98 mmHg
Interleukin-1 receptor antagonist is detectable in human carotid artery plaques and is related to triglyceride levels and Chlamydia pneumoniae IgA antibodies.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether the interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (Il-1ra) and interleukin-1beta (Il-1beta) can be detected in human carotid artery tissue, and whether their presence is related to evidence of Chlamydia pneumoniae infection, risk factors for atherosclerosis, and clinical data. SETTING: Departments of Vascular Diseases and Surgical Pathophysiology, University Hospital, Malmö,
Interference Rejection and Channel Detection in Mobile Communication
This thesis is devoted to statistical problems in mobile communication, in particular disturbance rejection and change detection are studied. Co-channel interference is a significant problem for systems based on TDMA, e.g. EDGE. We show methods for detection and suppression of such interference, when the terminal is equipped with only one antenna. Our algorithms are able to detect an interferer fo

Low serum concentration of sulfatide and presence of sulfated lactosylceramid are associated with Type 2 diabetes. The Skaraborg Project
Aims The glycosphingolipid sulfatide (sulfated galactosyl-ceramide) increases exocytosis of beta-cell secretory granules, activates K-ATP-channels and is thereby able to influence insulin secretion through its presence in the islets. A closely related compound, sulfated lactosylceramide (sulf-lac-cer), is present in the islets during fetal and neonatal life when, as in Type 2 diabetes, insulin is
