Complexation of copper(II) in organic soils and in dissolved organic matter - EXAFS evidence for chelate ring structures

Associations with functional groups of natural organic matter (NOM) are of great importance for bioavailability, toxicity, and mobility of trace metals in soils and waters. In this study, the coordination chemistry of copper, Cu(II), in organic soils and dissolved organic matter (DOM) from soils and streams was investigated by extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. In both

Fire Safety Risk Analysis of a Hotel

The first order second moment (FOSM) method is used for deriving a risk measure for safety of people in hotels. The measure is the reliability index ß. The safety is expressed as the evacuation time margin which is the difference between the available time before untenable conditions occur and the evacuation time. These times are subjected to uncertainty. The reliability index is used to determine

Crystallization and preliminary X-ray analysis of human dUTPase

Human dUTPase, expressed in Escherichia coli, has been crystallized. Single crystals were obtained by the vapour-diffusion technique using 2-propanol and PEG 4000 as precipitants. The enzyme was co-crystallized with the substrate dUTP and a metal chelator EDTA to prevent hydrolysis of the substrate. The crystals belong to the orthorombic space group P212121 with cell dimensions a = 67.51, b = 68.2

Ecological diversification in habitat use in subtidal triplefin fishes (Tripterygiidae)

Recent work has shown that habitat specialisation can lead to diversification in lacustrine and marine fish species. Here we investigate specialisation in the New Zealand triplefin fish fauna (Tripterygiidae), which has the greatest diversity and disparity of triplefin species in the world with 26 endemic species. Most species are sympatric throughout coastal New Zealand, showing no obvious latitu

Bone mineral density in patients with Crohn's disease during long-term treatment with azathioprine

OBJECTIVES: To ascertain whether patients with Crohn's disease treated with azathioprine maintained bone mineral mass better than patients treated with steroids alone. DESIGN: Retrospective study. SETTING: University Hospital of Malmo, Sweden. SUBJECTS: A total of 59 patients with ileocolonic, ileocaecal or colonic Crohn's disease. METHODS: Bone mass was assessed by dual photon X-ray absorptiometr

Multiple Sclerosis: Studies of the Interferon system and search for infectious agents

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease of the central nervous system, characterized by focal inflammatory lesions with demyelination and axonal loss. It is believed that MS is an immune-mediated disorder with both genetic and environmental contributions to the pathogenesis. Interferons (IFNs) are naturally occurring proteins known to have antiviral, antiproliferative and immunoregulatory eff

For Europe or empire? French Colonial Ambitions and the European Army Plan

This study deals with the furst attempt at postwar European integration in the defense and foreign policy fields. The European army plan was laid forth by Paris in 1950 after Washington demanded a German contribution to Western defense. Claiming that she could not accept a German presence in NATO, France instead drafted a plan for a supranational, European army. This ill-fated proposal occupied mu

Notes on the cetrarioid lichens.

The new species Cetraria peruviana is described and its systematic position is discussed. Cetraria nivalrs is reported as new from New Guinea, and its ascomata are described.

Surface characterization of the Gram-positive bacteria Bacillus subtilis - an XPS study

Interactions at the bacteria-solid interface in aquatic environments are of crucial importance in biofilm formation processes. The characterization of microbial surfaces properties is therefore a very important step for the understanding of these interactions. In this study, XPS spectra of Bacillus subtilis wet pastes centrifuged from suspensions over a span of pH values were recorded using a fast

New algorithms for prediction of wind effects on cold protective clothing

The European Pre-Standard for protective clothing against cold ENV 342:1998 suggests that the testing of thermal insulation should be made on a moving thermal manikin. In this way the value can be used to match requirements specified by the IREQ-method or as realistic input for prediction of thermal stress in other standards. It is known from prior work that insulation values measured with human s
