Status Spotting- A Consumer Cultural Exploration into Ordinary Status Consumption of "Home" and Home Aesthetics

Men, givet att de flesta människor inte har medlen, och kanske mer viktWhen lumping the notions of “status” and “consumption” together, people often think of expensive brands, conspicuous luxury, bling-bling and spectacular extravaganza. Not least in the case of the “home,” such associations go to Hollywood stars, spacious mansions, famous architects, swimming pools, and high-priced furniture design frenzy. But given that most people don’t have the means, and perhaps

Entropy-like Lyapunov Functions for the Stability Analysis of Adaptive Traffic Signal Controls

Stability of some decentralized traffic signal control policies for urban traffic networks is studied. It is proven that, whenever the arrival rates belong to a certain region -which is the largest where stability is possible- the resulting traffic network dynamics admit a globally asymptotically stable equilibrium. The results rely on the use of some entropy-like Lyapunov functions previously con

Detection and Classification of Liquid Explosives using NMR

In this work, we present a novel method for non-invasive identification of liquids, for instance to allow for the detection of liquid explosives at airports or border controls. The approach is based on a nuclear magnetic resonance technique with an inhomogeneous magnetic field, forming estimates of the liquid's spin-spin relaxation time, T2, and diffusion constant, D, thereby allowing for a unique

Priorities and overload control in OSA

An Open Service Access (OSA) gateway is modelled in a multi application environment. Also, an overload control mechanism is proposed. The mechanism supports different time constraints and priorities for the applications. By simulations it is shown how the proposed overload control works during different load conditions in the modelled environment.

Potential Architecture for Future Generation "Green" Wireless Base Station

Current radio frequency power amplifiers (PAs) in 3G base stations have very high power consumption leading to a hefty cost and negative environmental impact. In this paper, we propose a potential architecture design for future wireless base station. Issues associated with components of the architecture are investigated. A comparison of PA with pulse width modulation drive and PA with envelope eli

Cellular and Molecular Aspects of the Germinal Centre Reaction

The humoral immune response to a T cell dependent protein antigen will over time generate antibodies with an increased affinity to the antigen. This is due to a process known as affinity maturation and proceeds in a, for this purpose, well designed micro-milieu within secondary lymphoid organs known as germinal centres. The increase in affinity of an antibody in, e.g. mouse and man is due mainly t

Distances between Requirements Engineering and Later Software Development Activities: A Systematic Map

[Context and Motivation] The main role of requirements engineering (RE) is to guide development projects towards implementing products that will appeal to customers. To effectively achieve this RE needs to be coordinated with and clearly communicated to the later software development activities. [Question/Problem] Communication gaps between RE and other development activities reduce coordination a

Low power 0.18μm CMOS dual-band front-end

A dual-band CMOS front-end was designed and fabricated in a 0.18 μm CMOS process. The front-end employs a common-gate low noise amplifier (LNA) with capacitive cross coupling (CCC) technique and a passive mixer. The band selection is performed by switching a capacitor in and out of the LNA load, changing the resonance frequency between 2.2GHz and 4.0GHz. The measured noise figure is below 3.5dB fo

The van der Waals interaction between colloidal particles and its molecular interpretation

We discuss the relation between a description of the van der Waals interaction between colloidal partic es based on a molecular picture of matter with the Lifshitz description based on quantum electrodynamics. The main observations are as follows: (i) Starting from the Lifshitz description one can derive the exact Hamaker result for the dispersion interaction by applying the Clausius-Mossotti form

Cultural probes

How can qualitative and emotional aspects from users be mapped at the same time as they get something meaningful in return? This case study has developed the use of cultural probes [1] with a selection of ten families with small children in the Öresund region. The idea was to evoke thoughts about recreation and living for the probe users while providing information and inspiration to the scientist
