The authors evaluated physiologic, psychologic and metabolic effects of a nine-week in-hospital training program on 14 men with severe disabling angina pectoris. The exercise program consisted of intensive interval training on an ergometer bicycle for two 30 min sessions daily. The physical performance increased by about 40% (p less than 0.001). Plasma insulin levels were reduced and glucose toler

Acid hydrolysis of lignocellulose to hydrolysates intended for production of fuel ethanol results in the formation of byproducts in addition to fermentable sugars. Some of the byproducts, such as phenolic compounds and furan aldehydes, are inhibitory to the fermenting microorganism. Detoxification of the hydrolysates may be necessary for production of ethanol at a satisfactory rate and yield. The

The purpose of the present study was (1) to investigate the association between insomnia and alexithymia, as measured by the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) and its subscales, and (2) to test if the TAS20 and its subscales show the same correlational pattern with anxiety, depression and perfectionism in insomnia patients as has previously been found in non-clinical samples. A consecutive series

Can variation in egg size explain the local variation in tadpole growth and development of the common frog Rana temporaria or are other mechanisms, e.g. microevolution, involved? To study this, tadpoles were raised in outdoor tanks. Each tank housed tadpoles from one clutch. Eggs were collected during 2 years from six different ponds and their sizes were measured. Large eggs gave rise to tadpoles

Cytoplasmic protein-tyrosine kinases (PTKs) are enzymes involved in transducing a vast number of signals in metazoans, The importance of the Tec family of kinases was immediately recognized when, in 1993, mutations in the gene encoding Bruton's tyrosine kinase (Btk) were reported to cause the human disease X-linked agammaglobulinemia (XLA).((1,2)) Since then, additional kinases belonging to this f

Collagen VI, a microfibrillar protein found in virtually all connective tissues, is composed of three distinct subunits, alpha 1(VI), alpha 2(VI), and alpha 3(VI), which associate intracellularly to form triple helical heterotrimeric monomers then dimers and tetramers. The secreted tetramers associate end-to-end to form beaded microfibrils. Although the basic steps in assembly and the structure of

New experimental lifetimes for two levels in doubly ionized tungsten, W III, have been obtained using the time-resolved laser-induced-fluorescence technique. Theoretical oscillator strengths obtained from a HFR calculation including the effects of core-polarization are reported for all transitions from levels below E < 70000 cm(-1) and with log g f >= -2, thus greatly extending our knowledge of th

We investigated the effect of collimator selection on image quality in regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) studies of the brain performed with 99Tc(m)-HMPAO. A triple-headed SPET system (GE/CGR Neurocam) was used, together with three sets of parallel-hole collimators - general-purpose (GP), high-resolution (HR) and ultra-high-resolution (UHR). Two image quality parameters were used to describe the

Genetic similarity within pairs of individuals was examined using both 10 polymorphic microsatellite loci and multi-locus DNA fingerprinting profiles in a semi-isolated population of great reed warblers at Lake Kvismaren, south Central Sweden, in 1987-1993. The population was founded by a few individuals in 1978, followed by a gradual increase in numbers until 1988, since when the population has r

Hematopoietic cells contain secretory lysosomes that degranulate at sites of inflammation. We envisage that secretory granules can act as vehicles for targeting inflammatory sites, including malignancies, and thereafter, locally release therapeutically active agents to these sites. Exogenous proteins, such as the soluble tumor necrosis factor receptor 1 (sTNFR1), have been shown previously to be t

A joint experimental and theoretical work to explain the electronic and geometrical structure of an in situ prepared film of iron phthalocyanine (FePc) on silicon (100) is presented. FePc molecular films have been characterized by core and valence photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and the results have been interpreted and simulated by density functional theo

This study aimed to illuminate both the content of and the care given to demented people and the reflections of home care staff about it as revealed in two clinical group supervision sessions (n=36). Verbatim transcriptions were analysed using a phenomenological hermeneutic approach and the following were found to be reflected on: the pensioners' personal situation- disease-related behaviour, ADL-

In this study, a method was developed for determining the concentration of the pharmaceutical fluoxetine and its metabolite, norfluoxetine, in sewage water samples. Sample preparation was performed by hollow-fibre supported liquid membrane (HF-SLM) extraction with final analysis using liquid chromatography with UV detection. Several parameters were studied including type of organic solvent, sample
