I samband med stark medial uppmärksamhet runt hedersmord vid millennieskiftet erkändes hedersrelaterat våld och förtryck som ett särskilt samhällsproblem. Sedan dess har staten stärkt lagstiftningen på området och riktat särskilda satsningar för att bekämpa hedersrelaterat våld och förtryck. Hedersrelaterat våld och förtryck har sin grund i en patriarkal maktordning som återfinns i vissa kulturer.
