Modeling time-variant fast fading statistics of mobile peer-to-peer radio channels

Abstract in UndeterminedThe radio channels between nodes of an indoor peer-to-peer network show specific fast fading characteristics. Depending on the mobility and on the scattering properties of the environment, different kinds of fading distributions can occur: Ricean fading between static nodes, but also Rayleigh or even double-Rayleigh fading between mobile nodes. We investigate fast fading in

The future of medical diagnostics: review paper

While histopathology of excised tissue remains the gold standard for diagnosis, several new, non-invasive diagnostic techniques are being developed. They rely on physical and biochemical changes that precede and mirror malignant change within tissue. The basic principle involves simple optical techniques of tissue interrogation. Their accuracy, expressed as sensitivity and specificity, are reporte

Den kulturella vändningens provokationer

This article is a reflection on the changing landscape of academic history in recent decades and it captures shifts in this landscape. The points made are several. Firstly, postmodernism - or rather the linguistic and cultural turn - does not represent a break with the traditional paradigm of history, although it has challenged and annoyed several historians. Neither is it a temporary fashion. Ins

Quantum refinement of [FeFe] hydrogenase indicates a dithiomethylamine ligand

The active site of the [FeFe] hydrogenases contains two Fe ions bound to one Cys ligand, three CO molecules, two CN(-) ions, and a dithiolate ligand. The nature of the last of these has been much discussed, and it has been suggested that it contains C, N, or O as the bridgehead atom. Most experimental studies indicate a N atom, whereas a recent density functional theory (DFT) study of a crystal st

Advancing adolescent health and health services in Saudi Arabia: exploring health-care providers' training, interest, and perceptions of the health-care needs of young people.

Adolescent health is regarded as central to global health goals. Investments made in adolescent health and health services protect the improvements witnessed in child health. Though Saudi Arabia has a large adolescent population, adolescent health-care only began to emerge in recent years, yet widespread uptake has been very limited. Health-care providers are key in addressing and providing the ne

Strömgren Survey for Asteroseismology and Galactic Archaeology: Let the SAGA Begin.

Asteroseismology has the capability of precisely determining stellar properties that would otherwise be inaccessible, such as radii, masses, and thus ages of stars. When coupling this information with classical determinations of stellar parameters, such as metallicities, effective temperatures, and angular diameters, powerful new diagnostics for Galactic studies can be obtained. The ongoing Stromg

Coherent psi (2S) photo-production in ultra-peripheral Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN)=2.76TeV

We have performed the first measurement of the coherent psi(2S) photo-production cross section in ultraperipheral Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC. This charmonium excited state is reconstructed via the psi(2S) -> l(+)l(-) and ->(2S) -> J/psi pi(+)pi(-) decays, where the J/psi decays into two leptons. The analysis is based on an event sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 22 mu b(-1

The impact of Auto-ID on logistics performance

Purpose of this paper The purpose of this paper is to examine how logistics performance is affected by the use of different identification technologies and practices for utilising the tracking data. Design/methodology/approach The paper uses the survey method. The survey instrument was developed in co-operation with an expert group consisting of both researchers and industry representatives. The

Gastrointestinal symptoms in patients with cirrhosis: a longitudinal study before and after liver transplantation

Objective. Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms are common in cirrhosis and have an impact on quality of life. Their pathophysiology and their relation to energy intake have not been fully elucidated and the effect of liver transplantation on GI symptoms has not been studied. We aimed to prospectively evaluate GI symptoms and their determinants before and after transplantation and their potential relati

Divergent composition but similar function of soil food webs of individual plants: plant species and community effects

Soils are extremely rich in biodiversity, and soil organisms play pivotal roles in supporting terrestrial life, but the role that individual plants and plant communities play in influencing the diversity and functioning of soil food webs remains highly debated. Plants, as primary producers and providers of resources to the soil food web, are of vital importance for the composition, structure, and

En SAOB-artikel växer fram

This article presents a specific example of how the work of an editor of the comprehensive historical Swedish dictionary, published by the Swedish Academy, (SAOB) proceeds. The example concerns the Swedish preposition under ’under’ and accurately describes the process of writing that SAOB entry. Drawing from this particular word, it is shown how etymology governs also the semantic description, on

Controlling graphene corrugation on lattice-mismatched substrates

By means of synchrotron-radiation-based core-level spectroscopies we demonstrate that the degree of corrugation in graphene nanomesh on lattice-mismatched transition-metal substrates critically depends on the strength of chemical bonding at the interface. The degree of interfacial orbital hybridization between graphene and metal states is rising in the series Pt(111)-Ir(111)-Rh(111)-Ru(0001). This

Test Analysis Verification Using Open Software

Teaching the topic of structural dynamics in any engineering field is a true challenge due to the wide span of the underlying subjects like mathematics, mechanics (both rigid-body and continuum mechanics), numerical analysis, random data analysis and physical understanding. In this article we present a pedagogical example of using experimental modal analysis to verify and calibrate a finite-elemen

Tyrosine kinase inhibition in renal cell carcinoma and gastrointestinal stromal tumours: case reports

Background: Sunitinib malate is approved multinationally for the treatment of metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) and advanced imatinib-refractory gastrointestinal stromal tumour (GIST). Greater exposure to sunitinib is associated with improved efficacy. Therefore, minimising the impact of adverse events (AEs) on patient quality of life is important to enable patients to achieve optimal exposur

Agonistic Vocalisations in Domestic Cats : A Case Study

Introducing a new cat to a home with resident cats may lead to stress, aggression and even fights. In this case study 468 agonistic cat vocalisations were recorded as one cat was introduced to three resident cats in her new home. Six vocalisation types were identified: growl, howl, howl-growl, hiss, spit and snarl. Numerous other intermediate and complex vocalisations were also observed. An acoust

Landscape cultivation alters delta Si-30 signature in terrestrial ecosystems

Despite increasing recognition of the relevance of biological cycling for Si cycling in ecosystems and for Si export from soils to fluvial systems, effects of human cultivation on the Si cycle are still relatively understudied. Here we examined stable Si isotope (delta Si-30) signatures in soil water samples across a temperate land use gradient. We show that - independent of geological and climato
