Heat transfer and flow structure in a rotating duct with detached pin fins
The realizable k - ε turbulence model was used to calculate flow and heat transfer characteristics in a rotating rectangular duct with detached pin fins in staggered arrangement. Transverse and longitudinal spacings of the pin fins were S 1 = 2.5 D and S 2 = 2.5 D, respectively. Reynolds number was 7,000 and Rotation number (Ro) varied from 0 to 1 while the clearance ranged from 0 to 0.5. Strea
Mushroom bodies in crustaceans : Insect-like organization in the caridid shrimp Lebbeus groenlandicus
Paired centers in the forebrain of insects, called the mushroom bodies, have become the most investigated brain region of any invertebrate due to novel genetic strategies that relate unique morphological attributes of these centers to their functional roles in learning and memory. Mushroom bodies possessing all the morphological attributes of those in dicondylic insects have been identified in man
Drinking stories as a narrative genre : The five classic themes
Drinking stories feature widely in Western societies. Many people eagerly share their stories in the aftermath of drinking events. These stories are also common in books, movies, music and the media. Based on qualitative interviews with 104 young Norwegian heavy episodic drinkers, the article seeks to establish drinking stories as a distinct narrative genre. We argue that this narrative genre of d
Stories of Violence : A Narrative Criminological Study of Ambiguity
Violence features in human life, not only as actual physical confrontation but also as stories. Stories of violence are particularly important in violence-prone subcultures and among those partaking in the illegal drug economy. Drawing on narrative analysis, this study examines stories of violence among a population of incarcerated Norwegian drug dealers. Four widespread story types are identified
Keep an eye on your friends, even when you dont know them : Drug use and harm reduction in the Goa trance scene in Belgium
Aims: The use of illegal drugs is well documented in some alternative, underground music scenes, like the Goa trance scene. The aim of this article is to explore harm reduction practices employed by attendees of the Goa trance scene in order to identify potential pathways for targeted interventions in (underground) music scenes, such as Goa trance. Methods: Following pilot observations at Goa parti
Intoxicating stories : The characteristics, contexts and implications of drinking stories among Danish youth
Aims: To study the characteristics, contexts and implications of drinking stories among young drinkers. Methods: Ethnographic fieldwork was conducted among Danish youth at a beach resort in Bulgaria. The fieldwork included three months of participant observation and 45 semi-structured interviews with a total of 104 tourists and 11 guides. The participants in the study were aged between 16 and 26 y
Laughter in stories of crime and tragedy : The importance of humor for marginalized populations
Humor is essential to social life, but it is often overlooked in the study of crime and other social problems. We introduce and make use of humor theory, emphasizing the theories of superiority and relief. Based on interviews with incarcerated men, we demonstrate how humor is used to criticize authorities, for self-aggrandizement, and to alleviate the pain of tragic experiences. Funny remarks and
Passive approximation and optimization using b-splines
A passive approximation problem is formulated where the target function is an arbitrary complex-valued continuous function defined on an approximation domain consisting of a finite union of closed and bounded intervals on the real axis. The norm used is a weighted L p -norm where 1 ≤ p ≤ ∞. The approximating functions are Herglotz functions generated by a measure with Holder continuous density i
An exposé of the challenging practice development of sustainability reporting : From the first wave to the EU directive (2014/95/EU)
This chapter sets out to give an exposé of how sustainability reporting has developed into a global reporting practice. It gives a theoretical background to why companies (should) engage in sustainability reporting. Three arguments for providing sustainability reporting are at focus i) gaining, maintaining and/or repairing legitimacy, ii) improving stakeholder relations and iii) decreasing informa
Pebble-isolation mass : Scaling law and implications for the formation of super-Earths and gas giants
The growth of a planetary core by pebble accretion stops at the so-called pebble isolation mass, when the core generates a pressure bump that traps drifting pebbles outside its orbit. The value of the pebble isolation mass is crucial in determining the final planet mass. If the isolation mass is very low, gas accretion is protracted and the planet remains at a few Earth masses with a mainly solid
Building Kindey Exchange Programmes in Europe - An Overview of Exchange Practice and Activities
Bakgrund: Considerable differences exist among the living donor Kidney Exchange Programmes (KEPs) that are in use and being built in Europe, contributing to a variation in the number of living donor transplants [6]. Efforts of European KEPs to exchange (best) practices and share approaches to address challenges have, however, been limited. Methods: Experts from 23 European countries, collaborating

Weakening association of parental education: analysis of child health outcomes in 43 low- and middle-income countries
BackgroundParental education has been suggested to be an effective instrument for improving child health in low- and middle-income countries. Both education and child health have improved, however, as well as related factors. These changes may have implications for the observed association.MethodsWe used Demographic and Health Surveys conducted in 43 countries at two points in time, between 1991 a
Neutrophil extracellular traps in the central nervous system hinder bacterial clearance during pneumococcal meningitis
Neutrophils are crucial mediators of host defense that are recruited to the central nervous system (CNS) in large numbers during acute bacterial meningitis caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae. Neutrophils release neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) during infections to trap and kill bacteria. Intact NETs are fibrous structures composed of decondensed DNA and neutrophil-derived antimicrobial prote
Meta-analysis reveals that pollinator functional diversity and abundance enhance crop pollination and yield
How insects promote crop pollination remains poorly understood in terms of the contribution of functional trait differences between species. We used meta-analyses to test for correlations between community abundance, species richness and functional trait metrics with oilseed rape yield, a globally important crop. While overall abundance is consistently important in predicting yield, functional div
Development of a bioanalytical test battery for water quality monitoring : Fingerprinting identified micropollutants and their contribution to effects in surface water
Surface waters can contain a diverse range of organic pollutants, including pesticides, pharmaceuticals and industrial compounds. While bioassays have been used for water quality monitoring, there is limited knowledge regarding the effects of individual micropollutants and their relationship to the overall mixture effect in water samples. In this study, a battery of in vitro bioassays based on hum
Preserving Insulin Secretion in Diabetes by Inhibiting VDAC1 Overexpression and Surface Translocation in β Cells
Restriction-site associated DNA sequencing supports a sister group relationship of Nigritella and Gymnadenia (Orchidaceae)
The orchid genus Nigritella is closely related to Gymnadenia and has from time to time been merged with the latter. Although Nigritella is morphologically distinct, it has been suggested that the separating characters are easily modifiable and subject to rapid evolutionary change. So far, molecular phylogenetic studies have either given support for the inclusion of Nigritella in Gymnadenia, or for
An analysis of pool boiling heat transfer on nanoparticle-coated surfaces
In the present study, copper surfaces were deposited with Cu-Zinc nanoparticles of 0.6 mg by an electrophoretic deposition method (EPD). Two deposition patterns were designed, i.e., fully deposition (EPD-F) and channel-pattern deposition (EPD-C). In the channel-pattern deposition, the smooth channel and the deposition channel occur alternatively, by keeping the width of the smooth channel as 3 mm,
