An amplifying effect of exogenous and neurally stored 5-hydroxytryptamine on the neurogenic contraction in rat tail artery

1. The interactions between sympathetic neuroeffector transmission and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) were investigated in segments of rat isolated tail artery. 2. Contractile responses to field stimulation of the artery segments were abolished by tetrodotoxin (3 x 10(-7) M). A subthreshold concentration of acutely applied exogenous 5-HT (10(-8) M) markedly enhanced the contractions induced by sympath

A numerical comparison of three potential learning and forgetting models

Researchers from various disciplines have been pursuing better understanding of learning and forgetting processes. A range of mathematical models, sometimes based on empirical data, has been developed to measure the effect of production breaks on the learning process. Thus far, researchers and practitioners have not resolved the issue of how learning and forgetting interacts. However, some of the

Excited States in the Transitional N=45 Nucleus 85Zr

Excited states in the transitional nucleus Zr-85 were studied via the fusion evaporation reaction Fe-56((35)C1,alpha pn)Zr-85 at 120 MeV. A level scheme reaching up to probable spins of (33/2(+)) at 6.2 MeV and (27/2(-)) at 4.9 MeV was established and compared to neighbouring nuclei.

Fetal surveillance and outcome in postterm pregnancy

To minimize the risk of short-term and long-term morbidity and mortality among children born postterm, studies were performed to evaluate the fetal surveillance program. (1) Male-fetus pregnancies were at an increased risk

Capacitance measurements of exocytosis in mouse pancreatic {alpha}-, {beta}- and {delta}-cells studied in intact islets of Langerhans.

To determine the functions of fibromodulin (Fmod), a small leucine-rich keratan sulfate proteoglycan in tooth formation, we investigated the distribution of Fmod in dental tissues by immunohistochemistry and characterized the dental phenotype of 1-day-old Fmod-deficient mice using light and transmission electron microscopy. Immunohistochemistry was also used to compare the relative protein express

Inhibition of the rise in FFA by Acipimox partially prevents GH-induced insulin resistance in GH-deficient adults

To test the hypothesis that GH-induced insulin resistance is mediated by an increase in FFA levels we assessed insulin sensitivity after inhibiting the increase in FFA by a nicotine acid derivative, Acipimox, in nine GH-deficient adults receiving GH replacement therapy. The patients received in a double blind fashion either Acipimox (500 mg) or placebo before a 2-h euglycemic (plasma glucose, 5.5

Preventive home care of frail older people: a review of recent case management studies.

Preventive actions targeting community-dwelling frail older people will be increasingly important with the growing number of very old and thereby also frail older people. This study aimed to explore and summarize the empirical literature on recent studies of case/care management interventions for community-dwelling frail older people and especially with regard to the content of the interventions a

Impact of harvest intensity on long-term base cation budgets in Swedish forest soils

Abstract in UndeterminedThe effects of harvesting on the long-term mass balances of calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg) and potassium (K) were evaluated on a regional level in Sweden. A new high-resolution weathering database was used together with estimates of total deposition, losses through harvest and leaching. Estimates were made for pine and spruce separately and for two harvesting intensity scenar

Control of Dissolved Oxygen in Stirred Bioreactors

This report discusses control of dissolved oxygen in a bioreactor where the oxygen supply is manipulated using the stirrer speed. In batch and fed-batch cultivations the operating conditions change significantly which may cause tuning problems. Analysis using a linearized process model shows that the process dynamics is mainly affected by changes in the volumetric oxygen transfer coefficient $K_La

First Results from the Stopped Beam Isomer RISING Campaign at GSI

The first results from a series of experiments focused on the study of the internal structure of nuclei at the extremes of N:Z ratio using isomer spectroscopy are reported. These experiments represent the first of the Stopped Beam section of the Rare Isotopes Investigations at GSI (RISING) project. Exotic nuclei were synthesized using relativistic projectile fragmentation of similar to 500 -> 1000
