In-situ scanning electron microscope study of thermo-mechanical fatigue crack behaviour
Translation and validation of the Oxford-12 item knee score for use in Sweden
The Oxford-12 Item Knee Score is a recently developed and validated patient-completed outcome measure designed specifically for use with knee arthroplasty in the United Kingdom. We have translated this questionnaire into Swedish and tested the validity and reliability of the translated version in a cross-sectional study by a postal survey to 1,200 randomly selected patients from the Swedish Knee A
Microscopic aspects of the deposition of nanoparticles from the gas phase
The deposition process in a homogeneous electric field, and the subsequent microscopic arrangement of charged, metallic nanoparticles in the size range below 100 nm on flat substrate surfaces is described. The main aspect of the investigation is the transfer of the particles from a three-dimensional distribution in the gas phase into their arrangement on the substrate surface, in dependence on par
Mechanisms of inhibition of lipolysis by insulin, vanadate and peroxovanadate in rat adipocytes
Vanadate and peroxovanadate (pV), potent inhibitors of tyrosine phosphatases, mimic several of the metabolic actions of insulin. Here we compare the mechanisms for the anti-lipolytic action of insulin, vanadate and pV in rat adipocytes. Vanadate (5 mM) and pV (0.01 mM) inhibited lipolysis induced by 0.01-1 microM isoprenaline, vanadate being more and pV less efficient than insulin (1 nM). A loss o
A society With or Without Drugs : Continuity and change in Drug Policies in Sweden and the Netherlands
Den nederländska strävar efteIn debates about the Swedish and Dutch drug policies are usually positioned as opposites. The goal for the Swedish drug policy is to create a 'drug-free society'; while in the Netherlands a harm reduction approach prevails. In this study a drug policy is considered a practice of formal social control that can develop differently depending on the contexts in which it emerged. The period studied sta
An Adaptive Observer for Dynamical Ship Position Control Using Vectorial Observer Backstepping
In this paper, we propose an adaptive observer for dynamically positioned ships, that can be used together with the controller shown by Fossen and Grovlen, to design an observer-based adaptive control scheme. The resulting closed-loop system is globally asymptotically stable with respect to the ship positions and velocities, and globally stable with respect to adaptation to unknown parameters. A d
Saint Daniel of Sketis. A Group of Hagiographic Texts Edited with Introduction, Translation, and Commentary
This volume is a new edition with a parallel English translation of eight Greek stories related to Daniel of Sketis: 1) Abba Daniel from Sketis; 2) Abba Mark the Fool; 3) The blind man; 4AB) A holy and chaste young woman; 5) The woman who pretended to be a drunkard; 6) Eulogios the Stone-cutter; 7) Andronikos the Money-dealer and his wife Athanasia; 8) Anastasia Patrikia. The stories deal with se
Closure to "parameter estimation of beta distribution for unit hydrograph derivation"
A minimalistic all-atom approach to protein folding
Using simple sequence-based potentials, the folding properties of a designed three-helix-bundle protein, an alpha-helix and a beta-hairpin are studied. The three-helix-bundle protein is modelled using 5-6 atoms per amino acid and is found to undergo a first-order-like folding transition in which chain collapse and helix formation cannot be separated, which is in-accord with experimental data. The
Controversies in nephrology: renal albumin handling, facts, and artifacts!
In this article, we discuss and contradict a recent publication by Russo et al., which suggests that the filtration of large amounts of albumin followed by transtubular transport of intact albumin is a physiological phenomenon.

The Invisible Landscapes : The Construction of New Subjectivities in the Era of the Mobile Telephone
The interventions of portable digital devices such as mobile telephones, mp3 players, PDAs and many others, have contributed to the formation of contemporary notions of space. The impact of these devices' mobility (informing the users' mobility) could even be paralleled to the shift from the effects of still photography to those of film in the 19th century. Especially important for the perspective
Suppression of binding events via external perturbation with emphasis on QCM
Recent experiments indicate that the external perturbations, related e.g. to high-amplitude shear oscillations of the surface of a quartz crystal microbalance sensor, may suppress binding of mesoscopic aggregates (e.g., polystyrene spheres, vesicles, large proteins, etc.) to the surface. Using a simple kinetic model, we derive equations making it possible to conceptually understand and to mathemat
The predictive value of albuminuria for cardiovascular and renal disease. A 5-year follow-up study of 476 patients with type I diabetes mellitus
A 5-year follow-up study of 476 type I adult diabetic patients previously studied cross sectionally revealed that, during the observation period, 19 patients died and 30 developed cardiovascular or renal disease, such as myocardial infarction (n = 8), cerebrovascular disease (n = 3), amputation (n = 6), and renal insufficiency (n = 13). The patients were registered by one and the most-severe event
MYB oncogene amplification in hereditary BRCA1 breast cancer
Comparative genomic hybridization analysis has demonstrated that breast tumors from BRCA1 and BRCA2 germ-line mutation carriers contain a large number of chromosomal copy number gains and losses. A high regional copy number gain at 6q22-q24 was observed in one BRCA1 tumor, and fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis indicated a strong amplification of the MYB oncogene (15 copies of MYB compare
Ketamine and midazolam decrease cerebral blood flow and consequently their own rate of transport to the brain: an application of mass balance pharmacokinetics with a changing regional blood flow
Mass balance pharmacokinetics, with simultaneous blood sampling from an artery and the internal jugular vein, was used to characterize the cerebral uptake of ketamine, norketamine, and midazolam in normoventilated pigs. Intravenous injections of ketamine or midazolam decreased the cerebral blood flow (CBF) by one third, as measured by intermittent 133Xe washout. By means of pharmacodynamic models,
