Rate of over-diagnosis of breast cancer 15 years after end of Malmö mammographic screening trial: follow-up study.

Objective To evaluate the rate of over-diagnosis of breast cancer 15 years after the end of the Malmo mammographic screening trial. Design Follow-up Study. Setting Malmo, Sweden. Subjects 42 283 women aged 45-69 years at randomisation. Interventions Screening for breast cancer with mammography or not (controls). Screening was offered at end of randomisation design to both groups aged 45-54 at rand

Lactate dehydrogenase activity and isoform distribution in the rat urinary bladder: effects of outlet obstruction and its removal

The rat urinary bladder responded to infravesical obstruction by an increased weight. The weight began to increase after 3 days of obstruction. After 10 days the weight gain had become significant, but increased further with time. At 90 days the bladders weighed 12 times the initial weight. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity per unit bladder weight increased with the duration of the obstruction.

Search for fermiophobic Higgs bosons in final states with photons at LEP 2

Higgs boson production with subsequent decay to photons was searched for in the data collected by the DELPHI detector at centre-of-mass energies between 183 GeV and 209 GeV, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of nearly 650 pb(-1). No evidence for a signal was found, and limits were set on h(0)Z(0) and h(0)A(0) production with h(0) decay to photons. These results were used to exclude re

Surprising facts in Swedish Grammar

In this paper I discuss two surprising facs in Swedish grammar, the presence of a particular active verb form, the supine, after auxiliary have in perfect and pluperfect, and the free word order found in the middle fielld of main clauses. The supine is not found in any other Germanic language, and is presumably to be seen as a result of a historical coincidence. The free word order in the middle f

Affinity partitioning of biotinylated mixed liposomes: effect of charge on biotin-NeutrAvidin interaction

The partitioning behaviour of biotinylated mixed liposomes in aqueous poly(ethylene glycol)/dextran two-phase systems containing NeutrAvidin-dextran suggests that the biotin-NeutrAvidin affinity interaction is charge dependent. Biotinylated phosphatidylcholine liposomes with a low negative surface charge distributed in the NeutrAvidin-containing bottom phase at neutral pH, but the introduction of

Mellan det förflutna och framtiden : Den sandinistiska revolutionen i Nicaragua

The theme throughout this book is the buildning up of a new societal structure and the conflicts encompassed in such a project. I discuss the societal changes in Sandinista Nicaragua by way of placing the revolution in a historic, political, and social context. Throughout the work process it became increasingly clear that the conflicts of the FSLN were in principal due to two factors. First, the F

Oxidized lipoprotein autoimmunity: an emerging drug target in cardiovascular disease

Oxidative modification of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) in the arterial wall is believed to be one of the most important mechanisms involved in the development of atherosclerosis. It is well established that oxidized (Ox)-LDL uptake is responsible for the formation of macrophage foam cells, one of the most characteristic hallmarks of the atherosclerotic plaque, and that the proinflammatory and cyt

Carpal tunnel syndrome with severe sensory deficit: endoscopic release in 18 cases

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) with severe sensory deficit was treated with endoscopic carpal tunnel release in 18 hands of 16 consecutive patients (median age 72 (28-92) years). In all hands, preoperative 2-point discrimination (2-PD) exceeded 15 mm in the radial and ulnar sides of the pulps of at least 2 of the 3 radial digits. All patients underwent an independent evaluation and answered a questi

Sårbar men inte ensam - en studie av några drababdes erfarenheter av Kemiraolyckan, tsunamin och stormen Gudrun

The aim of this report is to illustrate how the affected after disasters have experienced their situation and the support from authorities. The study is based on interviews with 16 persons after the storm Gudrun in southern Sweden 2005, the Asian tsunami 2004 and an accident with toxic gas in a Swedish town 2005. The affected received most support, both practical and emotional, from their social

Effects of solvent exposure on testosterone levels and buturylcholinesterase activity in mice

In female and male mice the effect of exposure to trichloroethylene (TCE) seen at the lowest concentration is an increase in liver weight. The activity of plasma butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE) increases even more than the liver weight at corresponding concentrations, but only in the males. Depletion of testosterone through castration or destruction of the pituitary gland or hypothalamus, are the on
