Lipase production of 425 S. aureus strains isolated from patients with different clinical diagnoses and healthy carriers were measured by a specific method, using emulsified trioleoylglycerol substrate. Strains isolated from patients with septicemia showed significantly higher lipase activity than osteomyelitis strains (p = 0.011), impetigo strains (p = 0.002) and strains isolated from healthy rel

The remanent 4f spin structure of the epitaxial surface monoxide O(1 X 1)/Gd(0001) has been investigated using magnetic dichroism in core-level photoemission (MDPE). Here we report the observation of a substantial dichroic signal of the chemically shifted Gd-4f PE line. It demonstrates the presence of a non-vanishing net magnetization of the surface monoxide layer at cryogenic temperatures. (C) 20

PURPOSE: to investigate the prognostic importance of new small Q waves following an acute coronary syndrome. METHODS: We assessed 6-month mortality in 10,501 patients with non-ST-elevation acute coronary syndromes who had survived 30 days and had both admission and 30-day electrocardiograms. Patients were stratified by whether they had no new Q waves (n = 9447), new 30- to 40-ms Q waves (n = 733),

In FDCP2 myeloid cells, IL-4 activated cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterases PDE3 and PDE4, whereas IL-3, granulocyte-macrophage CSF (GM-CSF), and phorbol ester (PMA) selectively activated PDE4. IL-4 (not IL-3 or GM-CSF) induced tyrosine phosphorylation of insulin-receptor substrate-2 (IRS-2) and its association with phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3-K). TNF-alpha, AG-490 (Janus kinase inhibitor),

Introduction: Cyclic adenosine 3’5’-monophosphate (cAMP) and cyclic guanosine 3’5’-monophoshpate (cGMP) are critical intracellular second-messengers involved in the transduction of a wide variety of extracellular stimuli, including peptide hormones, growth factors, cytokines, neurotransmitters and light. These messengers modulate many fundamental biological processes, including growth, differentia

In recent decades there has been an increasing interest in the indoor environment and its connections with public health. One important topic discussed has been the relation between the moisture in buildings and health.
Cementitious materials, when cast, contain excess water since this is necessary for workability and for flow properties. The pore solutions in cementitious materials, besid

Current views on the mechanism of the formation of nodular graphite in cast iron are examined with respect to their explanatory power. The aim of this review is to find, if possible, a rationale for further studies. Arguments are presented in favour of a comprehensive model, encompassing the characteristics of both the nucleation and the growth of the graphite. A plea is made for focusing on the m

Elongation factor Ts (EF-Ts) is the guanine nucleotide-exchange factor for elongation factor Tu (EF-Tu) that is responsible for promoting the binding of aminoacyl-tRNA to the mRNA-programmed ribosome. The structure of the Escherichia coli EF-Tu-EF-Ts complex reveals a protruding antiparallel coiled-coil motif in EF-Ts, which is responsible for the dimerization of EF-Ts in the crystal. In this stud

This article describes a PIXE system designed and constructed for routine longitudinal scanning of single hair strands. In constructing a PIXE system for trace elemental scans of single hair strands on a routine basis, a fairly intense beam has to be used but the heating damage must be kept to a minimum. The experimental conditions (charge integration, beam homogeneity etc.) have to be carefully c

In the Prince Charles Mountains (PCMs) the conformable Permian-Triassic (P-T) succession is characterised by an abrupt transition from coal-bearing to coal-lacking strata, which coincides with the demise of the Permian Glossopteris-dominated flora. About 32% of the typical Permian spores and pollen are registered for the last time in the uppermost coal. Throughout the earliest Triassic an addition
