Performance thresholds, effort, and risk-taking

We develop a theory and perform an experiment to study the effect of performance thresholds on effort and risk-taking in economic decisions. We find that effort unambiguously increases compared to the ``status quo" level, but that optimal effort varies non monotonically with the threshold level. The effect of a threshold on risk-taking in instead ambiguous, as risk taking increases for thresholds

Trösklar och knutar inom grammatiken : teori och praktik

The aim of this dissertation is to map out and illustrate particularly troublesome and central areas in grammar learning. The point of departure is Josefsson and Lundin’s three suggested threshold concepts within grammar: to be able to distinguish between meaning, form and function, to be able to distinguish between a linear and a hierarchical dimension and to be able to identify and segment claus

What Money Shouldn’t Buy? Measuring Aversion to Monetary Incentives for Health Behaviors

We study attitudes toward offering monetary payments for vaccination. We develop the Policy Lab, an experimental paradigm to characterize policy preferences in which participants decide whether to implement actual interventions to influence others' real-world behavior. In two studies with representative samples of the Swedish population (N=2,010) and one with Swedish policymakers (N=2,008), partic

Helicobacter pylori, Inflammation, and Long-Term Outcome in Patients With Acute Myocardial Infarction : A Prospective Cohort Study

Background: Helicobacter pylori (Hp) and its virulence factor Cytotoxin-associated gene A (CagA) have been linked to myocardial infarction (MI), but the mechanisms are unknown. This study aims to test if Hp infection and CagA are associated with pre-specified inflammatory and vascular biomarkers in patients with MI and to explore whether a broader biomarker panel can predict infection. Furthermore

Rheological Modeling of Cheese Extrusion

Understanding the physical properties and flow behaviour of foods is essential for designing reliable processing equipment. In this thesis, the rheological properties and flow behaviour of Pasta Filata cheese are investigated to improve the understanding of the flow-distribution inside a Tetra Pak Cheese Extruder. Uneven flow-rates have been observed during production, which lead to inconsistent d

Ylle Kontorshotell

Exploring survival-associated transcriptomic subtypes in ovarian cancer using RNAseq from FFPE tissues in a clinical trial cohort

Objective Transcriptomic subtyping is not yet standardized for prognostic use in epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). This study aims to validate RNA sequencing (RNAseq) from formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissues and to evaluate survival-associated transcriptomic subtypes and differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in a clinical trial cohort. Methods An exploratory post hoc analysis was condu

A transfer cell for ultrahigh vacuum surface analysis of samples exposed to electrochemical environments

We present the design and implementation of a portable transfer system equipped with an integrated electrochemical cell that enables the controlled transfer of samples between an electrochemical environment and an ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) system without air exposure. This setup allows for the preparation of well-defined model surfaces, their electrochemical modification, and subsequent structural an

LES of Stable Combustion and Lean Blow-out in a Mach 2 Cavity Flameeholder

This study presents high-fidelity Large Eddy Simulations (LES) of supersonic combustion in a Mach 2 cavity flameholder over the full stable fueling region from 40 to 200 slpm. The simulations employ Finite Rate Chemistry LES with the Z70 ethylene-air mechanism, the Localized Dynamic k-equation model, Partially Stirred Reactor turbulence-chemistry interaction model, conjugate heat transfer, and the

A 25-year evaluation of direct local international normalized ratio calibration of the Owren type prothrombin time method in Sweden

Background All hospital laboratories in Sweden use the Owren prothrombin time (PT) method primarily to monitor anticoagulant treatment. Direct international normalized ratio (INR) calibration was introduced in 1999 under the supervision of Equalis, the national organization for external quality assessment (EQA) in laboratory medicine. Objectives We present 25 years of combined experience in develo

AI unboxed and jobs: A novel measure and firm-level evidence from three countries

A Quantitative Study of Perceived Level of Participation, Verbal and Social Interaction, and Care Environment for Female Inpatients in Swedish Forensic Psychiatric Care

Women constitute a minority among patients in forensic psychiatric care, which aims to improve the patients’ health while ensuring safety for patients, caregivers, and society. Participation in forensic psychiatric care can be complex; its definition depends on the context and perspective and is influenced by several factors. This study examined the perceptions of female patients and caregivers re

Tracking morphological development in stony corals

The shape of reef-building corals largely determines how they interact with their environment and the ecosystem services they provide. However, morphology is not fixed. As corals grow and develop from singular polyps to mature adult colonies, they experience pronounced changes in their morphology. This developmental trait variation remains poorly quantified in corals, despite their importance as e

Quality Assurance with Visual Inspection in Sheet Metal Forming Process for Automotive Industry

The sheet metal forming process is integral to the automotive industry, producing a variety of components essential for vehicle construction, including body panels, chassis parts, and structural supports. The process involves shaping thin metal sheets into desired forms using techniques such as bending, stretching, drawing, and stamping. In order to build high quality cars it is vital with an effi

Impact of extreme weather conditions on healthcare provision in urban Ghana

Extreme weather events pose significant threats to urban health in low- and middle-income countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa where there are systemic health challenges. This paper investigates health system vulnerabilities associated with flooding and extreme heat, along with strategies for resilience building by service providers and community members, in Accra and Tamale, Ghana. We em

Comparison between artificial intelligence-based and manual organ delineations in pretreatment computed tomography scans of prostate cancer patients : a visual grading study

This study aimed to evaluate the clinical acceptability of artificial intelligence (AI)-based organ segmentations on pretreatment CT images of prostate cancer patients using manual organ delineations as a reference. Paired AI-based segmentations and manual delineations of the prostate, urinary bladder, and rectum were evaluated by three observers, according to a 4-grade Likert-scale, based on qual

Populism, Immigration and Liberal Democracies Inherent Instability or Tipping of the Balance?

This chapter investigates how the challenging questions and tensions caused by migrants and their universalist claims for inclusion, have been approached and resolved in liberal democracies. By regarding the development of populism as a real and dangerous political phenomenon that has significant traction, the chapter asks whether populism adds something new to this approach and resolution. More s

Personality traits and grocery hoarding : the Role of Openness, Agreeableness and Neuroticism

During periods of economic and social stability, retailers rarely need to address grocery hoarding. However, in times of crises, understanding the driving mechanisms behind hoarding becomes crucial. This study investigates the relationship between consumers’ personality traits and grocery hoarding in Sweden during the beginning of Covid-19, applying the Five-Factor Model of personality (FFM), whic

School principals’ span of control and its cross-sectional associations with signs of exhaustion, perceived work ability, and demanding and supportive circumstances in managerial work

BackgroundTo educate students and prepare them for life in society, school principals, teachers, and staff need proper work-related organizational preconditions, motivation, and good health. In this context, span of control (SoC, i.e., the number of employees a manager is accountable for) is an understudied modifiable organizational precondition that influences the relationships between managers a
