The Impact of Variable DOC Concentrations on Acidification Assessments

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) affects the acidity in soil and lake waters and buffers both against acidification and against recovery from acidification. Current acidification assessments, based on the widely used MAGIC (Model of Acidification of Groundwater In Catchments) model, often assume constant DOC concentrations through time, but observations suggest this assumption may not be warranted.

AFM Colloidal Probe Measurements Implicate Capillary Condensation in Punch-Particle Surface Interactions during Tableting

Adhesion of the powders to the punches is a common issue during tableting. This phenomenon is known as sticking and affects the quality of the manufactured tablets. Defective tablets increase the cost of the manufacturing process. Thus, the ability to predict the tableting performance of the formulation blend before the process is scaled-up is important. The adhesive propensity of the powder to th

Porous calcium carbonate as a carrier material to increase the dissolution rate of poorly soluble flavouring compounds

Two different food grade functionalised porous calcium carbonates (FCC), with different pore size and pore size distributions, were characterised and used as carrier materials to increase the dissolution rate of poorly soluble flavouring compounds in aqueous solution. The loading level was varied between 1.3% by weight (wt%) and 35 wt%, where the upper limit of 35 wt% was the total maximum loading

Determination of interfacial amorphicity in functional powders

The nature of the surfaces of particles of pharmaceutical ingredients, food powders, and polymers is a determining factor for their performance in for example tableting, powder handling, or mixing. Changes on the surface structure of the material will impact the flow properties, dissolution rate, and tabletability of the powder blend. For crystalline materials, surface amorphization is a phenomeno

Effect of shell microstructure on oil migration and fat bloom development in model pralines

This study investigated the influence of shell microstructure on oil migration and fat bloom development in chocolate model systems. The microstructure of the model shells was varied by means of tempering or seeding cocoa butter and the addition of non-fat particles. Further, the impact of different storage conditions was studied. By using a set of novel analytical techniques the migration rate co

Databasskydd

The capacity to assemble, store, and make available information in databases is ever growing. This development has accelerated in recent decades, driven by the advent and increased use of digital networks. Already at an early stage, it led to demands for legal protection of databases. In most countries databases have been protected in national legislation based on copyright principles. However, th

On Uncertainty, Decision Values and Innovation

This paper contains a description, an alignment and a joint approach for technology readiness development with a three phases support of decision value analyses. The three phases are separated into the decision value forecasting, decision value analysis and the technology value quantification supporting the technological concept formulation and experimental testing, the prototype development and t

Reconstructing Stress Resultants in Wind Turbine Towers Based on Strain Measurements

Support structures of offshore wind turbines are subject to cyclic stresses generated by different time-variant random loadings such as wind, waves, and currents in combination with the excitation by the rotor. In the design phase, the cyclic demand on wind turbine support structure is calculated and forecasted with semi or fully probabilistic engineering models. In some cases, additional cyclic s

Combined Analysis-L1 and Total Variation ADMM with Applications to MEG Brain Imaging and Signal Reconstruction

In this article, we propose an efficient method for solving analysis-l1-TV regularization problems with a multi-step alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) approach as the fast solver. Additionally, we apply it to a real-data magnetoen-cephalography (MEG) brain imaging problem as well as to signal reconstruction. In our approach, the inverse problem arising in MEG or signal reconstruct

On the evolution of floral traits : Variation in complex floral phenotypes across pollination environments

Pollinators play a central role in shaping the astounding diversity of angiosperm flowers. Flowers are complex, multidimensional, genetically and functionally integrated phenotypes, rendering it a challenge to quantify and interpret observed trait variation. Even variation in simpler trait measurements is a challenge to interpret, because of the multitude of selective agents and evolutionary proce

Många minnen Gläntans camp at Fiskeboda in Sörmland welcomes young adults on the autism spectrum to relax, have fun, and meet new friends during school breaks. For some people it’s their first time away from home, for others, it’s a much anticipated highlight of the year. No matter if you come as a participant or as part of the staff. For a few weeks every year it’s home away from home. Lots of memories are m

Voices for the Forsaken : a Study of Bangladeshi Hip-Hop Subculture, Identity and Civic Engagement

The Bangladeshi Gen Zs and university students demonstrated a revolutionary example of civic engagement, participatory culture, subcultural identity formation, and reformation during the Student Quota Reform Movement in July, leading to the July massacre where thousands of protesting students were tortured and shot to death in public. The movement happened as an enraged response against the announ

Iterative and Geometric Methods for State Estimation in Non-linear Models

Many problems in science and engineering involve estimating a dynamic signal from indirect measurements subject to noise, where points can either evolve in continuous time or in discrete time. These problems are often formalised as inference in probabilistic state-space models, which are also frequently assumed to be Markovian. For inferring the value of the signal at a particular point in time, m

Routing optimization in optical burst switching networks: a multi-path routing approach

This chapter concerns routing optimization in optical burst switching (OBS) networks. OBS is a photonic network technology aiming at efficient transport of IP traffic. OBS architectures are in general bufferless and therefore sensitive to burst congestion. An overall burst loss probability (BLP) which adequately represents the congestion state of the entire network is the primary metric of interes
