Magnetic resonance imaging techniques for evaluation of left ventricular function
Hjärtinfarkt är en av de vanligaste anledningarna till för tidig död. Vid en hjärtinfarkt dör delar av hjärtmuskeln på grund av att den utsätts för mycket kraftig syrebrist när ett kranskärl täpps till. Även hjärtmuskelvävnad i infarktens närhet påverkas. Hjärtats vänsterkammare förser kroppen med syresatt blod. Exakt hur vänsterkammarens funktion påverkas under de första dagarna efter hjärtinfark
North European comparison of treatment strategy and survival in older patients with resectable gastric cancer : A EURECCA upper gastrointestinal group analysis
Background: As older gastric cancer patients are often excluded from randomized clinical trials, the most appropriate treatment strategy for these patients remains unclear. The current study aimed to gain more insight in treatment strategies and relative survival of older patients with resectable gastric cancer across Europe. Methods: Population-based cohorts from Belgium, Denmark, The Netherlands
Gender in Science & Technology : a Collection of Theses from the Physics Department at Lund University 2017
How are women and men, and ideas about masculinity and femininity, influencing science and what happens when technology is understood as gendered? This is the question on which the course “Gender Studies: Science & Technology” is founded. Organised as a cross-faculty collaboration between the Department of Physics and the Department of Gender Studies at Lund University, this course aims to pr
Nationwide Study on Treatment of Mycotic Thoracic Aortic Aneurysms
Objective/background: Mycotic aortic aneurysms are rare, life threatening, and complex. This nationwide study aimed to assess outcome after repair of mycotic thoracic aortic aneurysms (MTAAs). Methods: Patients treated in Sweden for MTAAs between 2000 and 2016 were identified in the Swedish vascular registry (2010–16) and local patient registries (2000–09). Primary outcome was survival, and second
Extracellular electron transfer features of the Gram-positive bacterium Enterococcus faecalis
Electroactive microorganisms possess the unique ability to transfer electrons to or from a solid phase electron conductor, e.g., electrodes or minerals, through various physiological mechanisms. The processes are commonly known as extracellular electron transfer and broadly harnessed in microbial electrochemical systems, such as microbial electrosynthesis or microbial fuel cells. Tinnitus and taste disturbances reported after myringoplasty : Data from a national quality registry
Objectives/Hypothesis: Postoperative tinnitus and taste disturbances after myringoplasty are more common than previously reported. Study Design: This study was a retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data from the Swedish National Quality Registry for Myringoplasty. Methods: The analysis was performed on extracted data from all counties in Sweden collected from database A from 2002 to

Statistical Modeling and Learning of the Environmental and Genetic Drivers of Variation in Human Immunity
During the last decade the variation in the human genome has been mapped in fine detail. Next generation sequencing has made it possible to cheaply and rapidly aquire vast amounts of biomolecular information on large cohorts of people. This have enabled large-scale epidemiological studies to investigate the relationships between environmental and genetic factors and human biomolecular traits. It i
Quantification of Total and Mutant Huntingtin Protein Levels in Biospecimens Using a Novel alphaLISA Assay
The neurodegenerative Huntington's disease (HD) is caused by a polyglutamine (polyQ) amplification in the huntingtin protein (HTT). Currently there is no effective therapy available for HD; however, several efforts are directed to develop and optimize HTT-lowering methods to improve HD phenotypes. To validate these approaches, there is an immediate need for reliable, sensitive, and easily accessib

Measures of low lung function and the prediction of incident COPD events and acute coronary events
Background: Although reduced lung function is associated with both COPD and coronary events (CE), the pattern of lung function impairment could be different for the two outcomes. We examined different measures of lung function in relation to incident COPD events and CE in a population-based cohort. Methods: Baseline spirometry and lung clearance index (LCI) were assessed in 672 men aged 55 years.
Near-Edge Soft X-ray Absorption Mass Spectrometry of Protonated Melittin
We have investigated the photoionization and photofragmentation yields of gas-phase multiply protonated melittin cations for photon energies at the K-shell absorption edges of carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen. Two similar experimental approaches were employed. In both experiments, mass selected [melittin+qH]q+ (q=2–4) ions were accumulated in radiofrequency ion traps. The trap content was exposed to i
Protease Inhibitors or NNRTIs as First-Line HIV-1 Treatment in West Africa (PIONA) : A Randomized Controlled Trial
BACKGROUND: Nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs) are recommended as part of first-line treatment for HIV-1 in Africa. However, NNRTI-based regimens are more prone to resistance development than protease inhibitors (PIs) in a context in which drug interruptions are frequent. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy and tolerability of NNRTIs with PIs in HIV-1-infected pa
Drone-based area scanning of vegetation fluorescence height profiles using a miniaturized hyperspectral lidar system
We have developed a compact hyperspectral lidar system based on a continuous-wave (CW) 445 nm diode laser and a double Scheimpflug imaging arrangement. The light-weight construction allows the integration of the system on a commercial drone. Airborne, range-resolved spatial imaging of vegetation fluorescence is demonstrated.

Lactate, lactate clearance and outcome after cardiac arrest : A post-hoc analysis of the TTM-Trial
Background: Admission lactate and lactate clearance are implemented for risk stratification in sepsis and trauma. In out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, results regarding outcome and lactate are conflicting. Methods: This is a post-hoc analysis of the Target Temperature Management trial in which 950 unconscious patents after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest were randomized to a temperature intervention
