BACKGROUND: The escalating global epidemic of obesity is of worldwide concern because of its association with several chronic diseases and premature mortality. Some subgroups seem to be more affected than others. The aim of this study was to examine whether the mean BMI (adjusted for age) and the prevalence of obesity (adjusted for all the explanatory variables) changed between 2000/01 and 2004/05

Frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) or frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a clinically and neuropathologically heterogeneous group of primary degenerative dementia diseases. The clinical representation consists of progressive psychiatric and/or neurological symtoms such as behavioural changes, language or motor dysfunction. FTD is usually divided into the following subgroups: Behavioural varian

Andningsorganen är särskilt känsliga och lungorna är en viktig upptagsväg fIt is important to decrease the burden of disease. This is in part achieved by decreasing risks. The aim of this thesis is to provide a methodology for the characterization of aerosol exposure, which may lead to negative health effects. Gases and airborne particles may cause negative health effects and the respiratory system is exceptional sensitive. Isocyanate is one group of substances that are

This paper is concerned with the numerical computation of the Titchmarsh-Weyl M matrix. We show how an algorithm may be developed which relates solutions of an initial-value problem to an approximation of the M matrix. In some special cases we compare the results from our algorithm with results obtained using special functions.

Epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) of cancer cells involves loss of epithelial polarity and adhesiveness, and gain of invasive and migratory mesenchymal behaviours. EMT occurs in prostate cancer (PCa) but it is unknown whether this is in specific areas of primary tumours. We examined whether any of eleven EMT-related proteins have altered expression or subcellular localisation within the e

Hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) numbers are tightly regulated and maintained in postnatal hematopoiesis. Extensive studies have supported a role of the cytokine tyrosine kinase receptor Kit in sustaining cycling HSCs when competing with wild-type HSCs posttransplantation, but not in maintenance of quiescent HSCs in steady state adult bone marrow. In this study, we investigated HSC regulation in Whit

PlThis thesis pertains to the models for studying sparking in chemically inert gases. The models are derived from the basic principles and framework in continuum mechanics. The processes taking place in a spark to flame transition can be segregated into physical and chemical processes. This study is focused on physical processes. The plasma is regarded as a single-substance material. One and two-dim

The requirements on optical links for transferring analog and digital signals from the detector front-ends to the readout electronics at future high-luminosity colliders are reviewed. The advantages of external modulation techniques are discussed. An outline is given of the the R&D programme recently started at CERN by a collaboration involving high-energy physics institutes, optoelectronics r

224 patients with undisplaced femoral neck fractures treated with two parallel Hansson hook pins were studied. After a mean follow-up time of 32 months (S.D. 5.2), 15% had a reoperation. 11% were considered failures, mostly avascular necrosis, and 9% had a secondary arthroplasty. Possible risk factors for poor outcome were analysed. Neither high age nor surgical delay was associated with increased

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between marital status and daily smoking, adjusting for economic conditions and trust. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. METHODS: In total, 27,757 individuals aged 18-80 years answered a postal questionnaire, which represents 59% of the random sample. A logistic regression model was used to investigate the association between marital status and daily sm

Background: Previous studies of differently charged polypeptides, Poly-L-lysine (PL) and Poly-L-Glutamate (PG) have shown promising results, reducing postoperative adhesions. This study aimed to investigate the possible anti adhesion effect of those combined polypeptides, after adhesiolys. The concentration of tPA, PAI-1 and active TGFb1 in biopsies from adhesions, unharmed peritoneum before and a
