This thesis is a study of the articles published in the Chinese newspaper Renmin Ribao, the People’s Daily, during the Great Chinese famine 1959-1961. The famine is considered to be the worst famine in the history of China and an estimated more than 30 million people died of starvation or illnesses brought about by starvation during these years. This thesis will be focusing on the articles pu

Analysis of the genetic contribution to the persistent resistance to an obesogenic lifestyle influence on BMI

Obesity has reached epidemic proportions in high-income countries during the last decades. At a population level, the speed of the progression of this epidemic indicates that lifestyle changes are a major contributor to the rising obesity rates. However, a part of the population has remained lean despite being exposed to obesogenic lifestyles. The objectives of this master thesis project are i) to

Retinal glial cells cultured on nanowire arrays

Nanotrådar passar väldigt bra för att interagera med celler på gruSemiconductor nanowires have in recent years gained attention in life science and are used for many different biological applications. The effect nanowires have on cells are still not well understood, however, there is an increasing number of studies investigating these interactions. Gallium phosphide (GaP) substrates were patterned using electron beam lithography (EBL) to create a pattern of alte

Airfoil Optimization Through Differential Evolution

This thesis presents the development of a numerical optimization algorithm for airfoils, and how it can be used in design of wind turbine blades. It was found that the developed algorithm successfully improves the goal parameters under given conditions and constraints. This research was conducted on behalf of Winfoor AB who has developed a conceptually new blade design, in which every single blade

General Methods for the Generation of Seamless Procedural Cities

Procedural generation as a concept is as old as computer graphics. It is usually defined as a method for creating data algorithmically as opposed to manually. Work in this area often revolves around noise functions and large degrees of randomness, which works well for chaotic structures and for generating natural environments, but it does not always suit more sophisticated and coherent environment

Between Forests and Climate Change: A Study of Climate Change Relations amongst small-scale Private Forest Owners in southern Sweden

The aim with this thesis is to broaden the understanding of relations surrounding climate change in small-scale private forestry in Sweden by present results from an fieldwork study of a small sample of private forest owners in the south of Sweden. The thesis shows how forest owners are situated within socio-ecological, and political contexts that affect their possibilities to cope with, and shape

From a small stream draining an agricultural catchment area in south Sweden, a temporal analysis of the occurrence of legacy pesticides was carried out and correlated with contemporary groundwater levelling, precipitation and flow rate of the stream, in order to evaluate groundwater outflow as an entry route for pesticides in the stream. Based on continuous measurement data from two periods of 12

18-F Radiolabelling of Thiodigalactosides as Galectin-3 Inhibitors

Eftersom kostnaden för att gå från en flaska på kemilabbet till en burk på apoteket ofta är miljardbelGalectin-3 is a soluble protein in the body that has been shown involvement in biological processes such as tumour growth and metastasis as well as auto immune disease. Molecules developed by Ulf Nilsson’s research group have shown inhibitory effect in in vitro and in vivo studies towards galecin-3 but to get detailed information about distribution in vivo studies using PET should be performed. Pr

Code Positioning in LLVM

Given the increasing performance disparity between processor speeds and memory latency, making efficient use of cache memory is more important than ever to achieve good performance in memory-bound workloads. Many modern first-level caches store instructions separately from data, making code layout and code size an important factor in the cache behavior of a program. This work investigates two met

An Exploratory Study of Employees’ Perceptions on Service Quality in the Examinations Council of Zambia

Service quality has been recognised as an important aspect for service organisations, however few studies have focused on service quality in public organisation, especially from the employee’s point of view. Employee perceptions are considered vital to the service quality in organisations as employees directly interact with customers and provide the services. Thus, this thesis aims to provide an u

Building a Biorefinery Business - If it does not fit, make it fit - strategies for successful commercialization

Due to a combination of economic challenges as well as uncertain policy conditions in the United States and the European Union, the development of (advanced) biorefineries has been slower than anticipated. This has hampered the transition to a more sustainable and less carbon-intensive economy, namely the bioeconomy. In this thesis, the technological innovation system (TIS) approach is combined wi

Water management and new clean technologies in Africa: A review of Compotherm

Challenges in water management are becoming more severe in many countries and this is exacerbated by climate change. With the increase of environmental threats, a new market for clean tech companies is emerging on the global scheme. The majority of these companies are small and medium seized companies (SME) under rapid growth. This paper is investigating the clean-tech product Compotherm. Two mark

Today’s human population is continuously increasing and this also increases the need of exploiting natural habitats. Increased exploitation results in loss of important habitats for different organisms, which in turn leads to biodiversity loss. The loss of biodiversity endangers the supply of ecosystem services, which is fundamental for human well-being. To mitigate the loss of biodiversity and ec

Formulation of ethanol based Pickering emulsions

The aim of this work was to study ethanol based particle-stabilized emulsions, using a known phenomena called Pickering emulsions. The intended uses of the studied emulsions are towards skin formulations, but other applications could be used. The particles of interest were quinoa starch modified with skimmed milk powder and heat treated afterwards. Comparison between modified starch and native sta
