Uppsatsen undersöker hållbarheten i att äga skog som allmänning och utforskar ägandeformen som alternativ till det statliga ägandet av skog. Det görs utifrån tesen att ett gemensamt ägande i form av allmänningar innebär en mer rättvis fördelning av resurser från skogsbruket och att ägandeformen skapar större möjlighet till ett ekonomiskt, socialt och politiskt inflytande i sitt lokala samhälle.
