BACKGROUND: National European cancer survival rates vary widely. Prolonged diagnostic intervals are thought to be a key factor in explaining these variations. Primary care practitioners (PCPs) frequently play a crucial role during initial cancer diagnosis; their knowledge could be used to improve the planning of more effective approaches to earlier cancer diagnosis. OBJECTIVES: This study sought t

The ability to convert between molecular spin states is of utmost importance in materials chemistry. Förster-type energy transfer is based on dipole-dipole interactions and can therefore theoretically be used to convert between molecular spin states. Here, a molecular dyad that is capable of transferring energy from an excited triplet state to an excited singlet state is presented. The rate of con

The macroscopic-microscopic finite-range droplet model is combined with a particle-rotor coupling model in order to systematically describe low-energy spectra of odd-odd nuclei. The odd proton and neutron are allowed to interact through effective nuclear forces representing the residual neutron-proton interaction. In particular, ground-state spins and parities are calculated and compared to data,

Phase separation of dough is based on the thermodynamic incompatibility of its components. The studies on phase-separated systems allow to model, understand, and develop foods. Model dough systems made with water and wheat flour were disassembled into their main structural phases, i.e. liquid, gel, gluten and starch phases, by ultracentrifugation, and further characterized with differential scanni

Introduction Breathlessness is the cardinal symptom in both cardiac and respiratory diseases, and includes multiple dimensions. The multidimensional instrument Dyspnoea-12 has been developed to assess both physical and affective components of breathlessness. This study aimed to perform a clinical validation of the Swedish version of Dyspnoea-12 in outpatients with cardiorespiratory disease. Method

This talk reports on the compilation of the new London–Lund Corpus (LLC–2) –a corpus of contemporary spoken British English, collected 2014–2019. The sizeand design of LLC–2 are the same as that of the world’s first corpus of spokenlanguage, namely the London–Lund Corpus (LLC–1), with spoken data mainlyfrom the 1960s. In addition to the fact that we have a corpus of contemporary speech, the existe

BACKGROUND: The New Public Management movement strove for transparency so that policy makers and citizens could gain insight into the work and performance of health care. As the use of the electronic health record (EHR) started to diffuse, a foundation was laid for enhanced transparency within and between health care organizations. Now we appear to be experiencing a new kind of transparency in the

As part of the Virus-X Consortium that aims to identify and characterize novel proteins and enzymes from bacteriophages and archaeal viruses, the genes of the putative lytic proteins XepA from Bacillus subtilis prophage PBSX and YomS from prophage SPβ were cloned and the proteins were subsequently produced and functionally characterized. In order to elucidate the role and the molecular mechanism o

This study proposes a technique for determining a tool–chip thermal conductance coefficient and heat flux in machining. The technique is based on solving an inverse heat transfer problem (IHTP). Because the IHTP is ill-posed, a priori information is required for its effective solution. To derive this information, substantial qualitative and quantitative analysis of a mixed boundary value problem f

Ethics is the study of the normative dimensions of human relations and experiences. This chapter discusses such questions in relation to basic values in modern society. The normative foundations for the analysis are the values of human dignity, autonomy, freedom, equality, and solidarity, as well as the responsibilities of society toward its citizens, including freedom, security, and justice. The

We ask what caused poverty to decline in Brazil during the first decade of the 21st century. Our contribution lies in the introduction of a structural change perspective to assess the evolution of poverty by considering the sectoral impact of growth and the social policies at the federal, state and municipal level. By structural change we mean the recomposition of output and employment over time.
