Common suppression pattern of eta and pi(0) mesons at high transverse momentum in Au plus Au collisions at root SNN=200 GeV
Inclusive transverse momentum spectra of eta mesons have been measured within p(T)=2-10 GeV/c at midrapidity by the PHENIX experiment in Au+Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV. In central Au+Au the eta yields are significantly suppressed compared to peripheral Au+Au, d+Au, and p+p yields scaled by the corresponding number of nucleon-nucleon collisions. The magnitude, centrality, and p(T) depende
Organic fouling of electrodialysis membranes with and without applied voltage
In this investigation organic fouling of ED membranes was studied with and without applied voltage. Fouling without the application of voltage, i.e., adsorption, was observed as an increase in the membrane resistance, and fouling with the application of voltage, i.e., conventional ED, was observed as an increase in the voltage drop across the membrane. Experiments were performed with three differe
PTSD and ADHD: underlying factors in many cases of burnout
Objective: To analyse the extent to which traumatic life events, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and the neuropsychiatric disorder attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) can be contributors associated with burnout and the long-term sick leave that results from it. Subjects: Sixty-two individuals on long-term sick leave due to stress-related poor health and burnout, and 83 working in
Skipping the Baltic: the emergence of a dichotomy of alternative spring migration strategies in Russian barnacle geese
Since the early 1990s, an increasing proportion of barnacle geese, Branta leucopsis, bound for breeding sites in the Russian Arctic delay their departure from the wintering quarters in the Wadden Sea by 4 weeks. These late-migrating geese skip spring stopover sites in the Baltic traditionally used by the entire population. Individual geese from an arctic colony tracked by satellite or light-level
Acute pancreatitis in Soweto, South Africa: Relationship between trypsinogen load, trypsinogen activation, and fibrinolysis
Objective: It is not known why acute pancreatitis in Soweto, South Africa, pursues an aggressive course. We sought clues from circulating trypsinogen load at admission as marker of initial acinar injury, trypsinogen activation using the carboxypeptidase B activation peptide as surrogate, proteinase inhibitors, the coagulation-fibrinolysis axis, indicators of inflammation, oxidative stress markers,
Does It Really Matter Where You Live? A Panel Data Multilevel Analysis of Swedish Municipality Level Social Capital on Individual Health-Related Quality of Life
We test whether individual health status is related to area-level social capital measured by rates of voting participation in municipal political elections, controlling for personal characteristics, where health status is measured by mapping responses to interview survey questions into the generic health-related quality of life measure (HRQoL) the EQ-5D in order to derive the health state scores.
ROS-independent regulation of TLR9-induced IL-12p70 by Ncf in murine dendritic cells
Inhibition of propylene oxidation to acrylic acid by amorphous overlayers on MoV(Nb)TeO based M2 catalysts
One of the most effective catalysts for the selective oxidation of propane to acrylic acid (AA) and ammoxidation to acrylonitrile (AN) is the MoV(Nb,Ta)(Te,Sb)O system, comprised of two phases, with M1 the major catalyst and M2 the co-catalyst in symbiosis with M1, converting intermediately formed propylene to the respective desired end products. An improvement in either phase should enhance the o
Change in and predictors of leisure activities among patients with rheumatoid arthritis: a prospective study.
Abdominal manifestations of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas
25 children (18 boys and 7 girls) were treated for non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL) during 1982-1990. The age at diagnosis was 2-15 years. Five of the 25 children died. Of the 25 children 6 patients had the diagnosis of intraabdominal NHL. The presenting abdominal symptoms for these 6 patients were abdominal pain in 4 cases, nausea 3, abdominal distention 2, icterus 1 and diarrhoea 1. Four of the 6 p
Levels of apolipoprotein M are not associated with the risk of coronary heart disease in two independent case-control studies
Apolipoprotein M (apoM), a 25 kDa plasma protein belonging to the lipocalin protein family, is predominantly associated with HDL. Studies in mice have suggested apoM to be important for the formation of pre-beta-HDL and to increase cholesterol efflux from macrophage foam cells. Overexpression of human apoM in LDL receptor-deficient mice reduced the atherogenic effect of a cholesterol-rich diet. Th
Chlorhexidine for prevention of neonatal colonization with group B streptococci. V. Chlorhexidine concentrations in blood following vaginal washing during delivery
Chlorhexidine 2 g/l was applied to the vagina of 96 women during delivery, whereas 28 served as controls. Both groups were given a shower using a chlorhexidine soap, and outer washing of the outer anogenital tract was also performed in all patients using chlorhexidine 2 g/l. Using a gas chromatographic method with a detection limit of 10 ng chlorhexidine per ml blood, 10-83 ng/ml was demonstrated
Metabolic effects of novel type 2 diabetes genes in a population aged 18-75 years
No evidence for genomic imprinting of the human BCR gene
Chronic myeloid leukemias and 5% to 20% of acute lymphoid leukemias are characterized by the Philadelphia chromosome, a reciprocal chromosomal translocation, t(9;22)(q34;q11), generating BCR-ABL and ABL-BCR fusion genes. Cytogenetic studies have recently shown a preferential involvement of the paternally derived chromosome 9 and the maternally derived chromosome 22 in this translocation, indicatin
Visual Position Tracking using Dual Quaternions with Hand-Eye Motion Constraints
In this paper a method for contour-based rigid body tracking with simultaneouscamera calibration is developed. The method works for a singleeye-in-hand camera with unknown hand-eye transformation, viewing a stationary object with unknown position. The method usesdual quaternions to express the relationship between the camera- andend-effector screws. It is shown how using the measured motion of ther
Synthesis of trans-3-carbamoyl-2-(3-pyridyl)-1,2,5,6-tetrahydro-3H-pyrrolo[2,1-a]isoquinolinium chloride by condensation of 2-carbamoylmethyl-1-methyl-3,4-dihydroisoquinolinium chloride with nicotinaldehyde
Condensation of 2-carbamoylmethyl-1-methyl-3,4-dihydroisoquinolinium chloride with nicotinaldehyde in the presence of a catalytic amount of piperidine affords trans-3-carbamoyl-2-(3-pyridyl)-1,2,5,6-tetrahydro-3H-pyrrolo[2,1-a]isoquinolinium chloride.0.
Advanced optics in a jellyfish eye
Cubozoans, or box jellyfish, differ from all other cnidarians by an active fish-like behaviour and an elaborate sensory apparatus(1,2). Each of the four sides of the animal carries a conspicuous sensory club ( the rhopalium), which has evolved into a bizarre cluster of different eyes(3). Two of the eyes on each rhopalium have long been known to resemble eyes of higher animals, but the function and
Do corridors promote dispersal in grassland butterflies and other insects?
Ecological corridors are frequently suggested to increase connectivity in fragmented landscapes even though the empirical evidence for this is still limited. Here, we studied whether corridors, in the form of linear grass strips promote the dispersal of three grassland butterflies, using mark-recapture technique in an agricultural landscape in southern Sweden. We found no effects of the presence o
Cardiac Structure and Function Before and After Parathyroidectomy in Patients With Asymptomatic Primary Hyperparathyroidism
Background: Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is associated with cardiac disease and increased risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. We investigated cardiac structural and functional parameters before and after successful parathyroidectomy in asymptomatic PHPT patients. Methods and Results: Forty-nine PHPT patients (age: 62.9 +/- 11 years, 5 men) and 48 healthy control subjects, matched
