Midrapidity direct-photon production in p+p collisions at root s=200 GeV
A measurement of direct photons in p+p collisions at root s=200 GeV is presented. A photon excess above background from pi(0)->gamma+gamma, eta ->gamma+gamma and other decays is observed in the transverse momentum range 5.5 < p(T)< 7 GeV/c. The result is compared to a next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculation. Within errors, good agreement is found between the QCD calculation and the meas
Decision making with unreliable probabilities
This paper presents a decision theory which allows subjects to account for the uncertainties of their probability estimates. This is accomplished by modelling beliefs about states of nature by means of a class of probability measures. In order to represent uncertainties of those beliefs a measure of epistemic reliability is introduced. The suggested decision theory is evaluated in the light of emp
The Psychological Factors Underlying Participation in Nature Conservation Projects
The goal of the study is to cast light on the psychological factors behind the participation in nature conservation projects aiming to promote biodiversity. Two projects, wetland restoration and forest preservation, are examined through the framework of the VBN (Value-Belief-Norm) theory. A survey was conducted among 120 farmers and 160 forest owners in southern Sweden. Results did not support the

Effect of mating disruption on reproductive behavior in the European pine sawfly, Neodiprion sertifer (Hymenoptera : Diprionidae)
Females of the European pine sawfly, Neodiprion sertifer (Geoffr) (Hymenoptera: Diprionidae), were released and observed inside and outside (=control) of areas treated with their sex pheromone for the purpose of mating disruption. In 1992 and 1993, respectively, 0 and 2.5% of the females were observed mating in the pheromone treated area during the first day compared with 28 and 26% in the control
Effect of spatially distributed hydrophobic surface residues on protein-polymer association
The effect of the spatial distribution of hydrophobic surface residues on the adsorption of a weakly hydrophobic polymer to proteins has been examined using a coarse-grain model solved by Monte Carlo simulations. A given number of surface sites were distributed randomly on the protein surface subjected to a distance constraint. Five protein classes for which the minimum distance between the sites

Measurement of D*(+/-) meson production and F-2(c) in deep-inelastic scattering at HERA
The inclusive production of D*+/-(2010) mesons in deep-inelastic scattering is studied with the HI detector at HERA. In the kinematic region 1 < Q(2) < 100 GeV2 and 0.05 < y < 0.7 an e(+) p cross section for inclusive D*+/- meson production of 8.50 +/- 0.42(stat.)(-100)(+1.21)(syst.) nb is measured in the visible range p(tD*) > 1.5 GeV and eta(D*) < 1.5. Single and double differential inclusive D*
Chemical enrichment in the early galaxy
New, precise abundance data for a large number of elements in a growingsample of extremely metal-poor stars are accumulating from the new 8-mtelescopes. Combined with theoretical models, these results advance ourunderstanding of the first generations of stars, whose nucleosynthesisproducts are fossilised in the oldest stars we see today and thus giveclues to the earliest phases of evolution in the
Comparison of accuracy and precision between frame-based and frameless stereotactic navigation for deep brain stimulation electrode implantation
The accuracy and precision of frameless neuronavigation as compared to conventional frame-based stereotaxy for implantation of deep brain stimulation (DBS) electrodes were studied in 14 patients with essential tremor. DBS electrodes were implanted bilaterally in the ventrolateral thalamus [ventrointermediate nucleus ( VIM)] in one procedure. Frameless neuronavigation was used on one side and the c
Critical pressure control of delamination in impulse drying
Different methods of preventing delamination in impulse drying are discussed, and a new method to avoid delamination is presented. The method is based on maintaining a low hydraulic pressure in the paper web. This gives a low temperature in the web, and the corresponding vapor pressure is not sufficient to delaminate the paper web. Experiments were made on a nip simulator to determine the critical
The ISM code in the context of Swedish port state control statistics
This article presents the results of a study evaluating the International Safety Management (ISM) Code’s effects on vessel performance in port state control (PSC) inspections in Swedish ports. PSC statistics are compared and analyzed between vessels that were required to implement the Code by 1998 and vessels that were not. Additionally, the results of a survey and interviews of Swedish PSC inspec
Proton dripline studies at ISOLDE: 31Ar and 9C
In this contribution examples of the application of new technologies to disentangle the mechanism of beta-delayed multiparticle emission are given. In particular the mechanism of β-delayed two-proton emission from 31Ar has been resolved and proved to be sequential, a preview of 9C-decay data is discussed.
Lactate dehydrogenase and its isoenzymes in vaginal fluid in vaginitis/vaginosis cases and in healthy controls
The objective of the study was to measure the lactate dehydrogenase (LD) activity in vaginal lavage fluid of women with vaginitis/vaginosis and in healthy pre- and post-menopausal controls. Also to analyse the LD isoenzyme patterns in such samples and compare the influence on the LD activity by different storage and sampling methods. Twenty of the women studied, who had no signs of inflammation as
