Using speculation to enhance javascript performance in web applications

JavaScript lets developers provide client-side interactivity in Web applications, but because it is sequential, it can't take advantage of multicore processors. Thread-level speculation (TLS) addresses this issue by enabling the speculation of JavaScript function calls and thus exploits the parallel performance potential multicore processors provide. The authors implemented TLS in the Squirrelfish

Polymorphism in the oxytocin promoter region in patients with lactase non-persistence is not related to symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Oxytocin and the oxytocin receptor have been demonstrated in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and have been shown to exert physiological effects on gut motility. The role for oxytocin in the pathophysiology of GI complaints is unknown. The aim of this study was to examine genetic variations or polymorphism of oxytocin (OXT) and its receptor (OXTR) genes in patients with GI complaints wi

Virus Entry via the Alternative Coreceptors CCR3 and FPRL1 Differs by Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 Subtype.

HIV-1 infects target cells by binding to CD4 and a chemokine receptor, most commonly CCR5. CXCR4 is a frequent alternative coreceptor (CoR) in subtype B and D HIV-1 infection, but the importance of many other alternative CoR remains elusive. We have analyzed HIV-1 envelope proteins (Env) from 66 individuals infected with the major subtypes of HIV-1 to determine if virus entry into highly permissiv

Process and product in writing-a methodological contribution to the assessment of written narratives in 8-12-year-old Swedish children using ScriptLog.

Twenty-seven children, with typical language development (TLD), 8-10 years old and 10-12 years old, were assessed with keystroke-logging in order to investigate their narrative writing. Measures of the writing process and the written product were used. One purpose was to explore how children produce written narratives in on-line production, and to relate the writing process to the written product.

PRO: The "Lund Concept" for Treatment of Patients With Severe Traumatic Brain Injury.

Two different main concepts for the treatment of severe traumatic brain injury have been established during the last 15 years, namely the more conventional concept recommended in well-established guidelines (eg, the US Guideline, European Guideline, Addelbrook's Guideline from Cambridge) on the one hand, and the Lund concept from the University Hospital of Lund, Sweden on the other. Owing to the l

Alcohol Screening and Risk of Postoperative Complications on Male VA Patients Undergoing Major Non-cardiac Surgery

BACKGROUND: Patients who misuse alcohol are at increased risk for surgical complications. Four weeks of preoperative abstinence decreases the risk of complications, but practical approaches for early preoperative identification of alcohol misuse are needed. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether results of alcohol screening with the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test - Consumption (AUDIT-C) questi

Large Eddy Simulation of Turbulent Premixed and Partially Premixed Combustion

In this thesis, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach is used to study turbulent premixed and partially premixed combustion. The CFD approach is based on large eddy simulation (LES) in which the large-scale structures of the flow are resolved on a grid, leaving only the small-scale structures (subgrid scales) to be modeled. The combustion modelling is based on the flamelet concept in which

The Principle of Rational Decision-Making: As Applied to the Identification of Normative Conflicts in International Law

The resolution of normative conflicts is a recurring issue for the application of international law, more so now than ever before. To help lawapplying agents to justify decisions resolving a conflict between two norms, international law provides a host of different conflict rules. As several studies reveal, to apply such a conflict rule, law-applying agents often have todraw on political considerat
