Plug flow of yoghurt in piping as determined by cross-correlated dual-plane electrical resistance tomography

Cross-correlation of electrical resistance tomography (ERT) was used to determine the velocity profile of yoghurt in a pipe of industrial dimensions. In viscometry, at shear rates higher than 10 s(-1), the yoghurt followed the power law model with a K-value of 3.7 Pa s(n) and an n-value of 0.37. In pipe flow, however, within the tested mean velocity range of 0.05-0.25 m s(-1), the yoghurt appeared

Recorded storm damage in Swedish forests 1901-2000

Severe storm damage has been a recurring problem to the Swedish forestry sector since, at least, the start of the 19th century. This short communication presents a regionally resolved time-series of storm damage in Swedish forests during the last century. Data on storm damage have been gathered from the National Board of Forestry, the Regional Forestry Boards and scientific reports. Storm damage i

Cytidine deaminase activity in synovial fluid of patients with rheumatoid arthritis: relation to lactoferrin, acidosis, and cartilage proteoglycan release

It is claimed that cytidine deaminase activity reflects local granulocyte turnover or activity in the synovial fluid of patients with rheumatoid arthritis, but cytidine deaminase is not a granulocyte specific enzyme. Lactoferrin is a granulocyte specific protein that is released from the secondary granulae during activation. We measured cytidine deaminase activity and lactoferrin concentrations in

Exploration of Supraventricular Conduction with respect to Atrial Fibrillation. Methodological Aspects on Selected Techniques

Atrial fibrillation is the most common cardiac arrhythmia that demands medical attention. Computer-based detailed analysis of cardiac electrical signals from healthy subjects and patients with a history of atrial fibrillation has become an important tool in the further clarification of this disease. The aim of this study was to explore supraventricular conduction using the following selected techn

Plasma beta-hexosaminidase isoenzymes A and B exhibit different relations to blood glucose levels in a population of Type 1 diabetic patients

The activity of lysosomal enzymes, such as beta-hexosaminidase (Hex), is increased in the plasma and serum of diabetic patients. A positive association has been shown between enzyme activity and glycated proteins, indicating an association with the degree of metabolic control. Several isoenzymes of Hex exist. Studies have reported different proportions of the isoenzymes in plasma from diabetic pat

Skeletal muscle fatigue and endurance in young and old men and women

The effects of increasing age on skeletal muscle fatigue and endurance were assessed in 22 healthy young (14 men and 8 women; mean age, 28 +/- 6 years) and 16 healthy old (8 men and 8 women; mean age, 73 +/- 3 years) individuals. All subjects performed 100 repeated maximum dynamic knee extensions at 90 degrees.s-1 (1.57 rad.s-1) using an isokinetic dynamometer (Cybex II). Peak torque was recorded

Skeingeborg : borgen som Saxo glömde

The castle Skeingeborg built around 1200 by the archbishop in Lund. It was build octagonal as a roadstation in the desert forestland at the border between Denmark and Sweden at the route between the bishopries in Lund and Växjö. The ironproduction and logistic possibilities in the area is discussed together with comparing studies of castles, roads and inland water transports in Denmark-Sweden

Systematic Synthesis of Substituted Phosphido-bridged Osmium Clusters

The labilised clusters [Os3(CO)11–nLn(NCMe)][n= 1, L = PMe3 or CNBut; n= 2, L = P(OMe)3] have been prepared. The reaction of [Os3(CO)11 –nLn(NCMe)] or [Os3(CO)10{P(OMe)3}(NCMe)] with either [Os3(CO)11(PH3)] or [Os3(µ-H)(CO)10(µ-PH2)] led to the formation of the phosphide-bridged clusters [Os6(µ-H)(CO)21{P(OMe)3}(µ-PH2)], [Os6(µ-H)(CO)21(PMe3)(µ-PH2)], [Os6(µ-H)(CO)21(CNBut)(µ-PH2)], [Os6(µ-H)(CO)2

Mutation analysis of the NSD1 gene in patients with autism spectrum disorders and macrocephaly

Background: Sotos syndrome is an overgrowth syndrome characterized by macrocephaly, advanced bone age, characteristic facial features, and learning disabilities, caused by mutations or deletions of the NSD1 gene, located at 5q35. Sotos syndrome has been described in a number of patients with autism spectrum disorders, suggesting that NSD1 could be involved in other cases of autism and macrocephaly

Lifetime of the isomeric O-2(+) state in Be-12

Mean lifetime tau of the isomeric O-2(+) state in Be-12 has been determined by measuring decay spectra of delayed y-rays from stopped Be-12 2 nuclei produced by the projectile fragmentation of O-18 at 100 A MeV. A consistent value of tau = 331 +/- 12 ns was obtained from the time spectra of the E2 gamma decay to the 2(1)(+) state and the positron annihilation following the E0 decay to the ground s

Brain lesion contrast in MR imaging. Dependence on field strength and concentration of gadodiamide injection in patients and phantoms

PURPOSE: To compare the contrast effects of gadodiamide injection at 0.3 and at 1.5 T, at different concentrations in phantoms, and to correlate the results to clinical doses used for examining brain lesions. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Gel phantoms with T1 and T2 corresponding to brain gray matter were doped with different concentrations of gadodiamide injection and examined with T1-weighted sequences.
