Opioid and amphetamine dependence is associated with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) : An epidemiological register study with 73,201 Swedish in- and outpatients 1997–2013

Background: While methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is increasing in prevalence globally, Sweden is still a low-prevalence country enabling studies on the natural MRSA spread in subpopulations unaffected by a surrounding highly infected population. Substance dependence and injection drug use have been risk factors for MRSA carriage and infection in other countries. In this retrosp

Comparison of a web-based food record tool and a food-frequency questionnaire and objective validation using the doubly labelled water technique in a Swedish middle-aged population

Two web-based dietary assessment tools have been developed for use in large-scale studies: the Riksmaten method (4-d food record) and MiniMeal-Q (food-frequency method). The aim of the present study was to examine the ability of these methods to capture energy intake against objectively measured total energy expenditure (TEE) with the doubly labelled water technique (TEEDLW), and to compare report

UHV and Ambient Pressure XPS : Potentials for Mg, MgO, and Mg(OH)2 Surface Analysis

The surface sensitivity of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) has positioned the technique as a routine analysis tool for chemical and electronic structure information. Samples ranging from ideal model systems to industrial materials can be analyzed. Instrumentational developments in the past two decades have popularized ambient pressure XPS, with pressures in the tens of mbar now commonplace.

The rate of brain death and organ donation in patients resuscitated from cardiac arrest : a systematic review and meta-analysis

Background: The occurrence of brain death in patients with hypoxic-ischaemic brain injury after resuscitation from cardiac arrest creates opportunities for organ donation. However, its prevalence is currently unknown. Methods: Systematic review. MEDLINE via PubMed, ISI Web of Science and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews were searched for eligible studies (2002–2016). The prevalence of b

Rapid decarbonisation of cities by addressing behavioural failures? A critical review of policy interventions

While many of the interventions to reduce carbon emissions target market failures, little attention is given to behavioural failures. This study investigates to what degree cities, which have taken a central role in global decarbonisation efforts, already incorporate findings from behavioural economics in their policy interventions. The ‘traditional taxonomy’ for policy intervention, represented a

How to support teenagers who are losing a parent to cancer : Bereaved young adults' advice to healthcare professionals—A nationwide survey

Objective:: The loss of a parent to cancer is considered one of the most traumatic events a teenager can experience. Studies have shown that teenagers, from the time of diagnosis, are already extremely worried about the consequences of a parent's cancer but tend to be left to manage these concerns on their own. The present study aimed to explore young adults' advice to healthcare professionals on

The shrunken pore syndrome is associated with declined right ventricular systolic function in a heart failure population – the HARVEST study

The close relationship between heart and kidney diseases was studied with respect to the ‘Shrunken pore syndrome’ that is characterized by a difference in renal filtration between cystatin C and creatinine. Patients were retrieved from the HeARt and brain failure inVESTigation trail (HARVEST) which is an ongoing study undertaken in individuals hospitalized for the diagnosis of heart failure. Ninet

Strategies to obtain pattern fidelity in nanowire growth from large-area surfaces patterned using nanoimprint lithography

Position controlled nanowire growth is important for nanowire-based optoelectronic components which rely on light emission or light absorption. For solar energy harvesting applications, dense arrays of nanowires are needed; however, a major obstacle to obtaining dense nanowire arrays is seed particle displacement and coalescing during the annealing stage prior to nanowire growth. Here, we explore

High-Performance Lateral Nanowire InGaAs MOSFETs with Improved On-Current

We report on In0.85Ga0.15As MOSFETs utilizing selectively grown lateral nanowires as the channel. These devices exhibit ON-current of ION = 565μ/Aμm at IOFF =100 nA/μm and VD=0.5 V, which is higher than all other reported values for III-V FETs. This is enabled by a transconductance of 2.9 mS/μm and a minimum SSsat of 77 mV/decade. A ballistic top-of-the-barrier model is used to model these devices

Using Alliances to Cut the Learning Curve of ICT

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is arguably an important, emblematic and ubiquitous technology of contemporary society. For many incumbent firms, the infusion of ICT into their industries poses both threats and opportunities. It might drive significant shifts of financial wealth and make firm performance change drastically. It entails managerial challenges of a kind we might not hav

Integrative Taxonomy Recognizes Evolutionary Units Despite Widespread Mitonuclear Discordance : Evidence from a Rotifer Cryptic Species Complex

Mitonuclear discordance across taxa is increasingly recognized as posing a major challenge to species delimitation based on DNA sequence data. Integrative taxonomy has been proposed as a promising framework to help address this problem. However, we still lack compelling empirical evidence scrutinizing the efficacy of integrative taxonomy in relation to, for instance, complex introgression scenario

Elevated basal insulin secretion in type 2 diabetes caused by reduced plasma membrane cholesterol

Elevated basal insulin secretion under fasting conditions together with insufficient stimulated insulin release is an important hallmark of type 2 diabetes, but the mechanisms controlling basal insulin secretion remain unclear. Membrane rafts exist in pancreatic islet cells and spatially organize membrane ion channels and proteins controlling exocytosis, which may contribute to the regulation of i

Cerebrospinal fluid tau, neurogranin, and neurofilament light in Alzheimer's disease

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) tau (total tau, T-tau), neurofilament light (NFL), and neurogranin (Ng) are potential biomarkers for neurodegeneration in Alzheimer's disease (AD). It is unknown whether these biomarkers provide similar or complementary information in AD. We examined 93 patients with AD, 187 patients with mild cognitive impairment, and 109 controls. T-tau, Ng, and NFL were all predictors

The protease inhibitor cystatin C downregulates the release of IL-β and TNF-α in lipopolysaccharide activated monocytes

Human cystatin C, a member of the cysteine proteinaseinhibitory family, is produced by all nucleated cells and has important roles in regulating natural immunity. Nematode homologs to human cystatin C have been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects on monocytes and to reduce colitis in mice. In Crohn’s disease, pathogenic activated monocytes help drive inflammatory processes via the release of p

Experimental and numerical study on heat transfer and pressure drop performance of Cross-Wavy primary surface channel

The Cross-Wavy primary surface heat exchanger is one of the most promising candidates for microturbine recuperators. In this paper, naphthalene sublimation experiments are performed for Cross-Wavy channels in a wind tunnel. The experimental results indicate that the entrance region has a small effect on the unit-averaged heat transfer coefficient of whole Cross-Wavy channels. Correlations of Nusse

Assessing regional progress towards a ‘Green Energy Economy’

This paper provides a regional, empirical analysis of policy portfolios that aim to contribute towards a ‘Green Energy Economy’ (GEE) transformation. Taking green economy policies and related indicators as the analytical framework, the study examines (i) the composition of policy portfolios promoting low-carbon energy technologies, (ii) short-term trends related to the GEE, (iii) long-term empiric

Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Intrinsically Disordered Proteins: On the Accuracy of the TIP4P‐D Water Model and the Representativeness of Protein Disorder Models

Here, we first present a follow-up to a previous work by our group on the problematic of molecular dynamics simulations of intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) [Henriques et al. J. Chem. Theory Comput. 2015, 11, 3420−3431], using the recently developed TIP4P-D water model. When used in conjunction with the standard AMBER ff99SB-ILDN force field and applied to the simulation of Histatin 5, our

Complementary strategies to improve positive response and outcome in patients with advanced heart failure undergoing CRT therapy

AbstractCardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) has improved quality of life and survival in select heart faillure patients, however 30-40% of patients do not show objective benefit from the treatment. At the same time there is little evidence about the long term effect of changes in medical treatment in these patients. Several factors have been examined to improve the response rate in the ”non-re

Positive Response to Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy : The Role of NT-proBNP

Abstract Background: Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is effective, but only 60-70% of patients benefit from the therapy. Despite numerous implantations, identification of predictive factors for response is still a challenge. We sought to assess the correlation of echocardiographic and clinical response to baseline demographics in relation to change in NT-proBNP levels at 6 months. Methods:
