Charged Polymers: From DNA to Polyampholytes

Mitt arbetThree main themes are outlined in this thesis: Polyelectrolytes/DNA : In a living cell, DNA molecules have a compact conformation in order to fit in, while in a test tube they will take on an expanded cylindrical shape, due to the negative phosphate groups along the DNA molecule. With the help of computer simulations it has been shown that like-charged monomers of a poly- electrolyte can attract

Automotive Electromagnetic Compatibility - Prediction and Analysis of Parasitic Components in Conductor Layouts

The electronics in the automotive industry is facing a new era where safety critical functions are electrified, as for example drive-by-wire technology. At the same time as the number of electrical loads in the vehicles is increasing, the time to market is decreasing. Full scale prototypes of a vehicle are often only available at a late stage in the development process where changes are rather cos

Strategies for evaluation of housing adaptations - Accessibility, usability and ADL dependence

Enligt svensk plan- och bygglagstiftning skall alla bostäder som byggs eller genomgår omfattande renoveringar vara tillgängliga och användHousing adaptation is a common intervention, in Sweden granted by municipal authorities, and performed in order to remove environmental barriers and enhance daily activities. In spite of increasing costs, efficient strategies for evaluation of the intervention are lacking. In this thesis, occupational therapy clients living in a south Swedish municipality and receiving housing adaptation grants we

The Elusive Appearance of Time

It is widely assumed that time appears to be tensed, i.e. divided into a future, present and past, and transitory, i.e. involving some kind of ‘flow’ or ‘passage’ of times or events from the future into the present and away into the distant past. In this paper I provide some reasons to doubt that time appears to be tensed and transitory, or at least that philosophers who have suggested that time a

Touchdowns in winespeak: ontologies and construals in use and meaning-making

The aim is to analyze wine descriptions in a lexical semantic framework that is capable of accounting for generalizations and explanations of use and meaning-making in general as well as in text genres such as wine tasting notes. The model is Lexical meaning as ontologies and construals (Paradis 2005), LOC for short, within the broader framework of Cognitive Semantics. Two touchdowns are made. The

Nordisk språkförståelse idag

The chapter gives a short description of the INS-investigation, its methods and results. The investigation tested 1800 pupils in secondary education in the three Scandinavian languages and English. The results show that youngsters in the Nordic countries are better at understanding English than their neighbouring languages. The results also indicate a deterioration in the comprehension of neighbou

SAR-ISAR Blending Using Compressed Sensing Methods

Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar (ISAR) target images are extracted using compressed sensing methods. The extracted images are edited and merged into measured Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images. A noise free image of the target is extracted from the Radar Cross Section (RCS) measurement by using the Basis Pursuit Denoise (BPDN) method and then solving for a model consisting of point scatterers.

Plant aquaporins

Aquaporins are integral membrane proteins that specifically transports water. In plants, aquaporins have been identified in the plasma membrane and in the vacuolar membrane. The presence of aquaporins provides the plant with an opportunity to regulate the flux of water between cells and within the cell by changing the abundance or activity of the aquaporins. One aquaporin, PM28A, and two aquaporin

Nonseparability of inferribility and measurability in quantum mechanics as a Systema Magnum

Quantum measurement theory has a peculiar nature with its TWO processes of assertibility, by proof and by measurement, which is beyond formal logic. This two-sortedness with respect to assertibility is discussed in terms of developments of many--sorted logics, sometimes referred to as Logica Magna. Although useful insights are obtained this way, we argue that there is a nonseparability of inferrib

Controlled axonal outgrowth and cell reactions to nanostructures

The interface between living cells and artificial surfaces are highly relevant for biomedical applications such as implants and organized cell growth for tissue reconstruction as well as for basic science purposes. In the present thesis, we have studied axonal guidance on various nano-patterned surfaces such as polymethyl-meth-acrylate, porous silicon and on magnetically aligned Ni nanowires. Furt
