Mordet i Jedwabne – en utmaning för polackernas kollektiva minne. En analys av den polska debatten kring Jan Gross bok Sąsiedzi (”Grannar”)

The article analyses the stormy debate in Poland caused by the publication in 2000 of Neighbors, a book written by the Polish-born American scholar Jan Gross. The book, that deals with the war-time mass murder of the Jewish population in the Polish town Jedwabne, encouraged by the Nazi Germans but perpetrated by local Poles, brought about shock and created a challenge to Polish collective memory.

Immobilization of peroxidase glycoprotein on gold electrodes modified with mixed epoxy-boronic acid monolayers

The development of bioelectronic enzyme applications requires the immobilization of active proteins onto solid or colloidal substrates such as gold. Coverage of the gold surface with alkanethiol self-assembled monolayers (SAMS) reduces nonspecific adsorption of proteins and also allows the incorporation onto the surface of ligands with affinity for complementary binding sites on native proteins. W

Effects of pelvic floor exercises in middle aged women with a history of naïve urinary incontinence: a population based study.

OBJECTIVE: To follow the effect of a 4-month pelvic floor exercise (PFE) program in women with naïve urinary incontinence with vaginal electromyography (EMG), pressure and palpation and also to compare the initial findings with symptom-free women of the same age.METHODS: The pelvic floor function expressed with vaginal EMG, pressure and palpation was measured before, during and after 4 months of P

Effects of different treatments on postural performance in patients with cervical root compression. A randomized prospective study assessing the importance of the neck in postural control

Patients with cervical root compression were used as a "model" to investigate the possible importance of neck disorders and cervical sensory information in postural control. We assessed postural performance with posturography before and after treatment in 71 consecutive patients with MRI-verified cervical root compression without medullary compression. The patients were randomized to surgery (n =

Complex N-glycans are the major ligands for galectin-1, -3, and -8 on Chinese hamster ovary cells

Galectins are implicated in a large variety of biological functions, many of which depend on their carbohydrate-binding ability. Fifteen members of the family have been identified in vertebrates based on binding to galactose (Gal) that is mediated by one or two, evolutionarily conserved, carbohydrate-recognition domains (CRDs). Variations in glycan structures expressed on glycoconjugates at the ce

Monoclonal antibody production using a new supermacroporous cryogel bioreactor

A supermacroporous cryogel bioreactor has been developed to culture hybridoma cells for long-term continuous production of monoclonal antibodies (mAb). Hybridoma clone M2139, secreting antibodies against J1 epitope (GERGAAGIAGPK; amino acids, 551-564) of collagen type II, are immobilized in the porous bed matrix of a cryogel column (10 mL bed volume). The cells got attached to the matrix within 48

Three-dimensional analysis of the movement of lumbar spinal nerve roots in nonsimulated and simulated adhesive conditions

Study Design. Biomechanical analysis of the movement of the lumbar spinal nerve roots (NRs). Objectives. The characteristics of the movement of lumbar spinal NRs corresponding to the change of posture were three-dimensionally analyzed in nonsimulated and simulated adhesion conditions using a porcine model. Summary of Background Data. There is a paucity of data on the movement of NRs. Materials and

Linoleic acid-stimulated vascular adhesion molecule-1 expression in endothelial cells depends on nuclear factor-kappaB activation.

Endothelial activation is an important step in atherogenesis. In addition to established cardiovascular risk factors, such as hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and homocysteinemia, high plasma levels of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins may be an important cause of endothelial activation as well. Free fatty acids hydrolyzed from core triglycerides of these particles can exert bot

Spectroscopic studies of random telegraph noise in small InP quantum dots in GaxIn1-xP

We have observed and investigated random telegraph noise in the photoluminescence (PL) from small InP quantum dots (QDs) in GaInP. Very few of the QDs exhibit switching between two states, which have similar total intensities, but distinctly different spectra. Usually, one of the states dominates at low excitation power and the other at high excitation power. The switching occurs on the time scale

Transpiration response to soil moisture in pine and spruce trees in Sweden

Variation in transpiration and conductance between individual trees of Scots pine and Norway spruce was investigated in a mixed 50-year-old stand in central Sweden. Daily transpiration rates were measured by the tissue heat balance method on five trees of each species during a dry, warm growing season. Daytime averages of sapflow, climatic variables and soil water content were used to fit an empir

Moisture in Concrete Subjected to Different Kinds of Curing.

This article outlines an experimental and numerical study of moisture in concrete subjected to air, water or sealed curing. For this purpose columns of eight qualities of concrete were studied at 3 different ages each over a period of 450 days. Parallel studies of hydration, internal relative humidity, self-desiccation and strength were carried out. Finally the article presents an analysis of the

Endovascular stent-anchored aortic grafts: a comparison between self-expanding and balloon-expandable stents in minipigs

PURPOSE: To study endovascular graft attachment with self-expanding Gianturco Z-stents and balloon-expanded Palmaz stents and the effect of these devices on the renal ostia. METHODS: Ten stent-grafts were constructed, 5 with Gianturco Z-stents and 5 with Palmaz stents. The endografts were implanted under fluoroscopic guidance into the abdominal aorta of 10 pigs so that the uncovered portion of the

Procedures and Strategies: Context-Dependence in Creativity

Recently, it has been suggested that at least somekinds of mental representation are strongly context-dependent. Not only what is represented, but also how, depends on the context and the subject's interaction with it. Theories about situated cognition stress the importance of the subject's bodily presence and physical activity in the environment for representing and thinking. What does this mean

Long term effects on epileptiform activity with vagus nerve stimulation in children.

Purpose: We report tong-term effects of vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) on epileptiform activity in 15 children, and how these changes are related to activity stage and to clinical effects on seizure reduction, seizure severity (NHS3) and quality of life (QOL). Methods: Initially, and after 3 and 9 months of VNS-treatment, 15 children were investigated with 24 h ambulatory EEG monitoring for spike d

Influence of experimental errors on the determination of flux control coefficients from transient metabolic concentrations

The influence of experimental errors on the determination of flux control coefficients from transient metabolite concentrations with the method proposed by Delgado and Liao [(1992) Biochem. J. 282, 919-927] has been investigated by using Monte Carlo simulations. The method requires least-squares fitting of the transient metabolite concentrations. Three different fitting methods have been evaluated

Level crossing investigation of the 6p^(2)P_(3/2) and 7p^(2)P_(3/2) levels of Cs 133, Cs 135, and Cs 137

The level crossing method has been used for the investigation of the hyperfine structure of the 6p2P3/2 and 7p2P3/2 levels of the isotopes Cs133, Cs135, and Cs137. For the hyperfine coupling constants a and b and for the lifetimes ? we find: a(6p Cs133)=50.72(3) gJ/-1.345, b(6p Cs133)=-0.38(18) gJ/-1.345 a(7p Cs133)=16.610(6) gJ/-1.3349, b(7p Cs133)=-0.15(3) gJ/-1.3349 a(6p Cs135)=53.64(4) gJ/-1.3
