Holocene vegetation dynamics and climate changes in the Torneträsk area, northern Sweden

Resultatet bygger på analyser av pollen och växtmakrofossil från 6 sjöar belägna på olika höjd över havet (370-999The aim of this study was to reconstruct the Holocene vegetation history and the climate changes in a subarctic area. The results are based on pollen and macrofossil records from six lakes in the Torneträsk area. The lakes are situated at altitudes between 370 and 999 m a.s.l., along a transect from the boreal pine-birch forest to the alpine tundra with heath vegetation. The chronology in each lak

Relationships between Atmospheric Circulation and Wind Erosion in Southern Sweden and Australia

Flera av dessa är direkt relaterade till klimatet, t ex vindhastighet och jordfukWind erosion is a serious threat to soil resources as it causes depletion of the fine fractions that may result in a less fertile soil. Wind erosion encompasses several processes of which many are related to climate variables. To date, there is little work performed on how wind erosion relates to climate and climate change. In this thesis, atmospheric circulation and wind erosion were analysed to

Epidemiologic Associations of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Sleep Position: Is There a Case for Causation?

Abstract Introduction Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is thought to be due to compression of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel. It is known that carpal tunnel pressures are elevated in wrist postures of flexion and extension and in those patients with CTS. Classic symptoms of CTS include night waking with pain, tingling, and numbness. These classic symptoms stimulated our interest in the relation

Chromosome 3 linked frontotemporal dementia (FTD-3)

Background: The authors have identified and studied a large kindred in which frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is inherited as an autosomal dominant trait. The trait has been mapped to the pericentromeric region of chromosome 3. Methods: The authors report on the clinical, neuroimaging, neuropsychological, and pathologic features in this unique pedigree collected during 17 years of study. Results: Twe

On geodesic exponential maps of the Virasoro group

We study the geodesic exponential maps corresponding to Sobolev type right-invariant (weak) Riemannian metrics mu((k)) (k >= 0) on the Virasoro group Vir and show that for k >= 2, but not for k = 0, 1, each of them defines a smooth Frechet chart of the unital element e is an element of Vir. In particular, the geodesic exponential map corresponding to the Korteweg - de Vries (KdV) equation ( k = 0)

Equality of Access in Health Care

Läkare och andra beslutsfattare påpekar regelbundet vikten av moraliska värderingar, och befolkningen i gemen torde delaEquality of access may be defined and operationalised in several ways. Paper I, 'Equality of access. Definitions and policy implications', proposes a theoretical outline of possible definitions of equal access, of the policy measures needed to attain equality and of their consequences. The health economic literature proposes two main definitions of equal access. Equal access prevails either when i

Time-resolved optical spectroscopy of the pulsating DA white dwarf HS 0507+0434B : New constraints on mode identification and pulsation properties

We present a detailed analysis of time-resolved optical spectra of the ZZ Ceti white dwarf, HS 0507+0434B. Using the wavelength dependence of observed mode amplitudes, we deduce the spherical degree, , of the modes, most of which have . The presence of a large number of combination frequencies (linear sums or differences of the real modes) enabled us not only to test theoretical predictions but al

Histological type of lung carcinoma in asbestos cement workers and matched controls

Histological types of lung carcinoma were examined in a case series of workers exposed to asbestos cement dust (n = 29) and matched controls (n = 87). The proportion of adenocarcinomas was 31% among the exposed subjects and 15% among the controls (mid-p = 0.05). Among workers with high exposure the proportion of adenocarcinoma was even higher (45%, 5/11; mid-p = 0.03). The proportion of peripheral

Eve and the serpent: A rational choice to err

In dealing with inexplicable disaster, like the untimely death of a child in a hospital, we increasingly turn to the justice system for accountability and retribution. While seemingly sensible, criminalizing human error has a range of negative consequences. But it does offer "good" narratives of failure as the result of human fault-even at the cost of guilt. Such narratives allow us to pinpoint a

Relations between coping strategies and health-related quality of life in patients with spinal cord lesion

Objective: Although the use of appropriate coping strategies has been suggested to be a key factor in determining successful adjustment to severe physical illness/disability, little systematic support for this link has been found. We investigated relationships between spinal cord lesion-related coping strategies and health-related quality of life when studying for sociodemographic, disability-rela

Theoretical models of adaptive energy management in small wintering birds

Many small passerines are resident in forests with very cold winters. Considering their size and the adverse conditions, this is a remarkable feat that requires optimal energy management in several respects, for example regulation of body fat reserves, food hoarding and night-time hypothermia. Besides their beneficial effect on survival, these behaviours also entail various costs. The scenario is

Glucagon receptor knockout mice display increased insulin sensitivity and impaired beta-cell function

In previous studies, glucagon receptor knockout mice (Gcgr(-/-)) display reduced blood glucose and increased glucose tolerance, with hyperglucagonemia and increased levels of glucagon-like peptide (GLP)-1. However, the role of glucagon receptor signaling for the regulation of islet function and insulin sensitivity is unknown. We therefore explored P-cell function and insulin sensitivity in Gcgr(-/

Genomic organization of the leukotriene B(4) receptor locus of human chromosome 14

The genomic region containing the genes encoding the first leukotriene B(4) receptor, BLTR, as well as the recently cloned second leukotriene B(4)-activated receptor, BLTR2, was mapped by (a) sequence analysis of a human bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) library containing a 15-kb segment corresponding to chromosome 14q11. 2-12 where the BLTR/BLTR2 genes were previously shown to be located, to

Methodologic support in habilitation and rehabilitation: communicative action between practice and science

This study evaluated the early phase of development of a model for quality improvement of habilitation and rehabilitation project processes. The focus of the methodologic support in habilitation and rehabilitation model was on cooperation between practice contexts and science. Habermas' theory about communicative action was a theoretical frame of reference. Three project coordinators and ten proje
