Popular Abstract in Swedish I denna avhandling har jag studerat frisättning samt effekter av GABA i de Langerhanska öarna i bukspottskörteln. GABA är en välkänd signalmolekyl i hjärnan och man vet att den där har en hämmande effekt på hjärncellerna. Detta betyder att GABAs effekter i hjärnan ofta är lugnande och/eller sövande. GABA finns även i höga koncentratitioner i de insulinproducerande β-celGABA (γ-aminobutyric acid) is a well-known inhibitory neurotransmitter in the CNS. GABA is also present at high concentrations in the insulin-producing β-cells in the islets of Langerhans, but its function there is less clear.
