ON THE THEORY OF COINCIDENCE SPECTRA

We discuss spectra where both a primary photoelectron and a secondary decay particle are measured. We point out the striking similarity with threshold-excited emission spectra and predict resonant peaks analoguous to those found in resonant photoemission.

French as cL2, 2L1 and L1 in pre-school children

Compared to monolingual first language acquisition (L1) and adult second language acquisition (aL2), relatively little research has been done on child second language acquisition (cL2). This is an unsatisfactory situation from both a practical and a theoretical point of view. The present study concerns cL2 acquisition of French and poses the question whether cL2 acquisition bears closer resemblanc

Endogenous androgens and risk of epithelial ovarian cancer: results from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC).

Few epidemiologic studies have examined the hypothesis that circulating androgens are involved in the development of ovarian cancer. We investigated the association between prediagnostic serum levels of androgens and sex hormone–binding globulin (SHBG) and ovarian cancer risk in a case-control study nested within the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition cohort. One hundred

Allergy to an occupational allergen (Sapelli wood) in a child

The case is presented of a child who developed rhinoconjunctivitis, angioedema and asthma by sensitization to Sapelli wood, which was used in his father's carpentry. Positive skin-prick test, high levels of specific immunoglobulin E by ELISA and a positive conjunctival challenge test suggest a type I hypersensitivity mechanism to this wood. This is the first case report of sensitization to Sapelli

Environmental Implications of Product Servicising. - The Case of Outsourced Computing Utilities

Elektronikindustrin haThe life cycle of electronic products is associated with significant environmental impacts. Compared to many other products, the production of electronics and in particular semiconductors is resource intensive and generates a number of highly toxic waste streams in manufacturing and post-consumer stages of product life cycle. Electronics manufacturing industry has been successful in reducing envir

CHICSi - a compact ultra-high vacuum compatible detector system for nuclear reaction experiments at storage rings. I. General structure, mechanics and UHV compatibility

CELSIUS Heavy-Ion Collision Silicon detector system (CHICSi) is a large solid angle, barrel-shaped detector system, housing up to 600 detector telescopes arranged in rotational symmetry around the beam axis. CHICSi measures charged particles and fragments from nuclear reactions. It operates at internal targets of storage rings. In order to optimize space and momentum-space coverage and minimize th

I dennThis dissertation deals with the social structure of ordinary life in an early modern Swedish town as seen from the perspective of women. The questions which are dealt with are: What kinds of social relations, in addition to those inside the family, were women in an early modern town involved in? How did these differ from the relations men were involved in and how did they differ with regards to t

Radius-closing the circle on the assessment of imaging performance

The RADIUS (Radiological Imaging Unification Strategy) project addresses the assessment of image quality in terms of both physical and clinically relevant measures. The aim is to unify our understanding of both types of measure as well as the numerous underlying factors that play a key role in the assessments of imaging performance. In this way it is expected to provide a solid basis for the impro

Innovations and Industrial Performance in Finland 1945 - 1998

This book deals with industrial renewal in Finland during the period 1945-98. One of the most recent trends in the advanced economies has been an accelerating rate of innovations and technological change. Previously, innovation was often generated through a series of discrete steps in research, development, and production. Today, innovation is increasingly generated in networks where value is gene

Mongolic vowel shifts and the classification of the Mongolic languages

Although the Mongolic language group consists of ten rather closely related languages, there is no consensus in the literature about the classification of the languages into subgroups. One reason for this is the occurrence of more or less independent phonological innovations which are difficult to order in time and which may have spread geographically rather than genetically. All Mongolic language

The max-log list algorithm (MLLA) - A list-sequence decoding algorithm that provides soft-symbol output

We present a soft decoding algorithm for convolutional codes that simultaneously yields soft-sequence output, i.e., list sequence (LS) decoding, and soft-symbol output. The max-log list algorithm (MLLA) introduced in this paper provides near- optimum soft-symbol output equal to that of the max-log maximum a posteriori (MAP) probability algorithm. Simultaneously, the algorithm produces an ordered l
