Production of omega mesons at large transverse momenta in p+p and d+Au collisions at root S(NN) = 200 GeV
The PHENIX experiment at RHIC has measured the invariant cross section for omega-meson production at midrapidity in the transverse momentum range 2.5 < p(T)< 9.25 GeV/c in p+p and d+Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV. Measurements in two decay channels (omega ->pi(0)pi(+)pi(-) and omega ->pi(0)gamma) yield consistent results, and the reconstructed omega mass agrees with the accepted value withi
God vård på lika villkor vid hjärtinfarkt i dagens Sverige. Geografiska skillnader i dödlighet utan betyd
It is a known fact that the 1990s brought a decrease in mortality after myocardial infarction in Sweden but that differences in mortality rates following myocardial infarction still remain between the Swedish counties. Unresolved, however, are questions as to what these inter-county differences mean for the individual patient and what role hospital care plays in this context. We analysed all patie
Flexible Scheduling Methods and Tools for Real-Time Control Systems
This thesis deals with flexibility in the design of real-time control systems. By dynamic resource scheduling it is possible to achieve on-line adaptability and increased control performance under resource constraints. The approach requires simulation tools for control and real-time systems co-design. One approach to achieve flexibility in the run-time scheduling of control tasks is feedback sched
Planning of Environments for People with Physical Disabilities Using Computer Aided Design
In the area of environment adaptations for people with physical disabilities, it is of vital importance that the design is optimized considering the human-environment interactions. All involved persons in such a planning process must be given sufficient support in understanding the information, so that everyone can participate actively. There is an apparent risk that discussions will be kept betwe

In vitro activity of synthetic antimicrobial peptides against Candida
Yeast-like fungi are the most common cause of fungal infections in humans. Actually, in the age of opportunistic infections and increasing resistance, development of modern antifungal agents becomes a very important challenge. This paper describes synthesis and antimicrobial assay of four naturally occurring peptide antibiotics (aurein 1.2, citropin 1.1, temporin A, uperin 3.6) and three chemicall

Dentistry in Sweden - Healthy work or ruthless efficiency?
The general objective of this thesis is to provide an understanding of the organization of Sweden's Public Dental Health Service (PDHS) and the problems it has faced, e.g. dentists’ job dissatisfaction. This is done against the background of the historical development of the Service. The thesis comprises five papers, based on two empirical studies. Questionnaires were used for both studies: respon
Cluster headache - Aetiology, diagnosis and management
Cluster headache is characterised by repeated attacks of strictly unilateral pain in the orbital region associated with local autonomic symptoms or signs. The attacks are brief but of a very severe, almost excruciating intensity. For unknown reasons males are affected more often than females. Recent studies suggest that an autosomal dominant gene has a role in some families with cluster headache.
Psychological factors related to performance when cycling
A genetic basis for shared autoimmunity in mouse models.
Development of autoimmune disease is the result of activation of the immune system that subsequently leads to tissue destruction. Although the clinical outcome significantly differs between autoimmune diseases, some pathogenic pathways could be shared. During the recent years, intense efforts to find the genetic factors behind development of the complex and polygenic autoimmune diseases have been
Computational Methods for Hybrid Systems
This thesis considers two different computational approaches for the analysis and synthesis of nonlinear systems. Each of these approaches is presented in a conference paper that describes parts of the theory and algorithms. Matlab commands implementing the algorithms have been developed and the manuals for these are included herein as well.

On Latin hypercube sampling for structural reliability analysis
Latin hypercube sampling is suggested as a tool to improve the efficiency of different importance sampling methods for structural reliability analysis. In simple importance sampling, where the sampling centre is moved from the origin to the design point, standard Monte Carlo sampling can be replaced by Latin hypercube sampling. The efficiency improvement is then highly dependent on the choice of s
Neural beta-adrenergic dilatation of the facial vein in man. Possible mechanism in emotional blushing
Ring preparations of the superficial buccal segment of the human facial vein, taken from extirpated tissue in 12 patients during neck surgery, were studied in vitro. The vein developed a maintained intrinsic myogenic tone in response to passive stretch and was supplied with alpha- as well as beta-adrenoceptors, both of which could be influenced by transmural nerve stimulation (TNS) and noradrenali
