Isolated electrons and muons in events with missing transverse momentum at HERA
A search for events with a high-energy isolated electron or muon and missing transverse momentum has been performed at the electron-proton collider HERA using an integrated luminosity of 13.6 pb(-1) in e(-) p scattering and 104.7 pb(-1) in e(+) p scattering. Within the Standard Model such events are expected to be mainly due to W boson production with subsequent leptonic decay. In e(-) p interacti
ZOOPLANKTON FEEDING ECOLOGY - GRAZING DURING ENCLOSURE STUDIES OF PHYTOPLANKTON BLOOMS FROM THE WEST-COAST OF SWEDEN
The effects of grazing on natural phytoplankton populations was examined during enclosure studies on the effects of nutrients, zooplankton, and ctenophores on phytoplankton bloom dynamics on the west coast of Sweden in May, 1990. Grazers included the copepods Acartia clausi Giesbrecht, Centropages hamatus Lilljeborg, and Oithona similis Claus, and the marine cladoceran Podon polyphemoides Leuckart

Biocompatability of surfaces for antibody microarrays: Design of macroporous silicon substrates
Antibody microarray is a novel technology with great promise within proteomics. Intense work is under way to evolve this methodology into the high-throughput proteomic research tool needed by the research community. Despite recent advances, there is a growing need for additional highperformance substrates for antibody microarrays as well as for protein arrays in general. In this study, we have suc

The Uses of History and Regional Consciousness
The chapter deals with the problem how history is used to promote a regional consciousness, focusing mainly on the Barents region.

Dust measurements in the Jovian magnetosphere
Dust measurements have been obtained with the dust detector onboard the Galileo spacecraft inside a distance of about 60RJ from Jupiter (Jupiter radius, RJ = 71,492 km) during two periods of about 8 days around Galileo's closest approaches to Ganymede on 27 June and on 6 Sept 1996. The impact rate of submicrometer-sized particles fluctuated by a factor of several hundred with a period of about 10

Magnitude and time-course of arterio-venous differences in blood-alcohol concentration in healthy men
Background and objective: Human studies of arterio-venous (AV) differences in drug concentrations and the consequences for pharmacokinetic modelling and concentration-effect relationships are very limited. We therefore investigated the intravenous and intra-arterial concentrations of alcohol (ethanol) during the absorption, distribution and elimination stages of alcohol metabolism in healthy men.
Crafting Democracy : Civil Society in Post-Transition Honduras
Popular Abstract in Swedish Hur kan det civila samhället bidra till demokratisk utveckling? Inom demokratiseringsforskningen framställs ofta det civila samhället som ett centralt inslag i demokratiseringsprocessen. Vi saknar emellertid tydliga teoretiska föreställningar om vilken funktion det civila samhället fyller i en demokrati och om hur det civila samhällets organisationer kan bidra till demoCivil society is frequently singled out as one of the most important factors in the democratization process, but existing research is often imprecise with regard to civil society’s relation to democratic development. This study analyzes how, and under what circumstances, civil society can contribute to democratic development in newly established democracies. A conceptual framework is outlined that
Reciprocal translocation (11;19)(q23;p13) in congenital acute lymphoblastic leukemia
The cytogenetic, clinical, and immunologic findings ina 4-month-old girl with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) are reported. The malignant lymphoblasts were characterized cytogenetically by the reciprocal translocation t(11;19)(q23;p13); immunologically by an immature pre-B-ALL phenotype. In spite of the high-risk nature of the leukemia, the patient attained complete remission relatively quickly

Plasminogen enhances virulence of group A streptococci by streptokinase-dependent and streptokinase-independent mechanisms
Interactions between host plasminogen (Plg) and streptokinase (SK) secreted by group A streptococci ( GAS) have been hypothesized to promote bacterial invasion of tissues. The virulence of GAS strain UMAA2616, after being subcutaneously inoculated into mice, was studied. Skin lesions and mortality were observed after inoculation of 7 x 10(6) cfu. Coadministration of human Plg with UMAA2616 markedl
Remote imaging laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy and remote cultural heritage ablative cleaning
We report, for what we believe to be the first time, on remote imaging laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). Measurements have been performed by using a tripled Nd:YAG laser working at 355 nm with 170 mJ pulse energy, with an expanded beam that is focused onto a target at 60 m distance. The LIBS signal is detected by using an on-axis Newtonian telescope and an optical multichannel analyzer.
