Professionals’ perspectives of prosthetic and orthotic services in Tanzania, Malawi, Sierra Leone and Pakistan
Background: Evidence-based recommendations are lacking for prosthetic and orthotic services in low- and lower-middle-income countries. Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare and synthesise findings related to experiences of prosthetic and orthotic service delivery in Tanzania, Malawi, Sierra Leone and Pakistan from the perspective of local professionals. Study design: This is a qualitati

Breaking a cycle of perceived failure : The process of making changes toward a more balanced lifestyle
Introduction: Balancing Everyday Life (BEL) is a new lifestyle intervention for mental health services users, developed to support meaningful engagement in daily activities and a balanced lifestyle. This study aimed at exploring the BEL participants’ process of making lifestyle changes. Methods: This constructivist grounded theory study took place in Sweden from 2013–2017 and explored the processe
Superconductivity in the presence of magnetic steps
This thesis investigates the distribution of superconductivity in a Type-II planar, bounded, and smooth superconductor submitted to a piecewise-constant magnetic field with a jump discontinuity along smooth curves---the magnetic edge. This discontinuous case has not been treated before in the mathematics literature, where the considered applied magnetic field is usually assumed to be smooth. We exa
Influence of polar co-solutes and salt on the hydration of lipid membranes
The influence of the co-solutes TMAO, urea, and NaCl on the hydration repulsion between lipid membranes is investigated in a combined experimental/simulation approach. Pressure-hydration curves obtained via sorption experiments reveal that the repulsion significantly increases when the membranes are loaded with co-solutes, most strongly for TMAO. As a result, the co-solutes retain additional water

Near-Field Measurement and Calibration Technique for RF EMF Exposure Assessment of mm-wave 5G Devices
Accurate and efficient measurement techniques are needed for exposure assessment of 5G portable devices---which are expected to utilize frequencies beyond 6 GHz---with respect to the radio frequency electromagnetic field exposure limits. Above 6 GHz, these limits are expressed in terms of the incident power density, thus requiring that the electromagnetic fields need to be evaluated with high prec
Biogeochemistry in Subarctic birch forests : Perspectives on insect herbivory
Särskilt störreväxtätare har studerats i stor utsträckning, men i vissa ekosystem som skogar kan de mindre ryggradslösa växtätHerbivory can influence ecosystem processes, partly through long-term changes of the plant community compositions, but also more rapidly through the herbivores’ digestive alteration of the organic matter that is cycled through the soil and back to the primary producers. In the Subarctic mountain birch (Betula pubescens ssp. czerepanovii) forest (SMBF) in Northern Fennoscandia, outbreaks by the geo
Highly conductive nonstoichiometric protic poly(ionic liquid) electrolytes
Nonstoichiometric protic ionic liquids have recently gained interest because proton acceptors are crucial in the electrolyte of many electrochemical applications such as fuel cells, proton batteries and supercapacitors. In the present work we have prepared and studied several protic poly(ionic liquid)s doped with acid in nonstoichiometric amounts. The poly(ionic liquid)s were based on polydimethyl

Structure and energetics of molecular recognition in galectin-3-ligand interactions
Molecular recognition is the key aspect of any cellular and biological function. Two or more molecules interacting with each other cause the effects that drives various basic functions that are fundamental to cells. Be these protein-protein, protein-nucleic acid or protein-ligand interactions, they all play important roles in a cell. Protein-ligand interactions are the most studied as they can havMolecular recognition is the key aspect of any cellular and biological function. Diagnostic value of alternative techniques to gadolinium-based contrast agents in MR neuroimaging-a comprehensive overview
Gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs) increase lesion detection and improve disease characterization for many cerebral pathologies investigated with MRI. These agents, introduced in the late 1980s, are in wide use today. However, some non-ionic linear GBCAs have been associated with the development of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis in patients with kidney failure. Gadolinium deposition has also
Migration and Hybrid Political Regimes: Navigating the Legal Landscape in Russia
While migration has become an all-important topic of discussion around the globe, mainstream literature on migrants' legal adaptation and integration has focused on case studies of immigrant communities in Western-style democracies. We know relatively little about how migrants adapt to a new legal environment in the ever-growing hybrid political regimes that are neither clearly democratic nor conv
Mechanical properties of ultra-hard nanocrystalline cubic boron nitride
Nanostructure and mechanical properties of bulk nanocristalline cubic boron nitride have been studied by transmission electron microscopy and micro- and nanoindentation. The obtained data on hardness, elastic properties, and fracture toughness clearly indicate that nano-cubic (F 4 3 m) boron nitride belongs to a family of advanced ultrahard materials.
Global, regional, and national incidence, prevalence, and mortality of HIV, 1980-2017, and forecasts to 2030, for 195 countries and territories : a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2017
BACKGROUND: Understanding the patterns of HIV/AIDS epidemics is crucial to tracking and monitoring the progress of prevention and control efforts in countries. We provide a comprehensive assessment of the levels and trends of HIV/AIDS incidence, prevalence, mortality, and coverage of antiretroviral therapy (ART) for 1980-2017 and forecast these estimates to 2030 for 195 countries and territories.M
Land cover and land use classification performance of machine learning algorithms in a boreal landscape using Sentinel-2 data
In recent years, the data science and remote sensing communities have started to align due to user-friendly programming tools, access to high-end consumer computing power, and the availability of free satellite data. In particular, publicly available data from the European Space Agency’s Sentinel missions have been used in various remote sensing applications. However, there is a lack of studies th
Transcriptome-wide association study of multiple myeloma identifies candidate susceptibility genes
BackgroundWhile genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of multiple myeloma (MM) have identified variants at 23 regions influencing risk, the genes underlying these associations are largely unknown. To identify candidate causal genes at these regions and search for novel risk regions, we performed a multi-tissue transcriptome-wide association study (TWAS).ResultsGWAS data on 7319 MM cases and 234,3
Analysis of 153 115 patients with hematological malignancies refines the spectrum of familial risk
Estimating familial cancer risks is clinically important in being able to discriminate between individuals in the population at differing risk for malignancy. To gain insight into the familial risk for the different hematological malignancies and their possible inter-relationship, we analyzed data on more than 16 million individuals from the Swedish Family-Cancer Database. After identifying 153 11
