Seeking evidence that cell kill guided thermotherapy gives results not inferior to those of transurethral prostate resection: Results of a pooled analysis of 3 studies of feedback transurethral microwave thermotherapy

Purpose: We compared ProstaLund Feedback Treatment(R) (PLFT(R)) to transurethral prostate resection (TURP) in terms of efficacy and safety in a pooled analysis of 3 clinical studies with 1-year followup. Materials and Methods: Overall raw data on 183 patients with PLFT(R) and 65 with TURP were pooled. All studies had identical inclusion criteria, and the efficacy and safety of the method were eval

Behind the Charts - Exploring Conditions for High Level Emergency Response Management in a Complex Environment

The thesis uses, as a starting point for a discussion of emergency response management, the problem of gradual coordinated adaptation of management functions in relation to an event and its dynamics. Empirical observations and analyses carried out in the research project show that important problemsolving processes not included in, and sometimes diverging from, planning and preparations frequently

Deposition of particle-attached radon progeny in the respiratory tract - an experimental study of children and adults in home environments

A method to study total deposition of aerosol attached radon progeny in children and adults have been validated and used in home environments. Two persons, one child and one adult are tested simultaneously, thus inhaling from the same aerosol and allowing for a direct comparison. The aim of the study was to increase the knowledge of the lung deposition and thereby the knowledge of the radiation do

Frequency chirp of harmonic and attosecond pulses

We study the phase of the atomic polarization in the process of high-order harmonic generation. Its dependence on the laser intensity and the harmonic order induce a frequency variation in time (chirp) respectively of the harmonic pulses and attosecond pulses. We review the recent experimental results on the temporal characterization of the harmonic emission and show that measurements performed us

Time-resolved X-ray diffraction studies of phonons and phase transitions

Det har använts länge och har framgångsrikt hjälp vetenskapsmän att bestämma strukturen hos en stor mängd materiaThis thesis summarizes work in which time-resolved X-ray diffraction has been used to probe crystalline materials, thereby revealing the dynamics of phonons and phase transitions. X-ray diffraction is the standard tool in investigations of structure on the atomic scale. It has been used for a long time, and has successfully helped scientists to find the structure of a wide range of materials. The

Late aortic arch perforation by graft-anchoring stent: complication of endovascular thoracic aneurysm exclusion

PURPOSE: To describe a fatal case of late aortic perforation by an endograft-anchoring stent. METHODS AND RESULTS: A 69-year-old woman presented 2 years after thoracoabdominal aneurysm repair with a 9-cm dilatation of the descending thoracic aorta proximal to the conventional aortic graft. A 38-mm Dacron graft with multiple Gianturco Z-stents sutured inside was placed transluminally across the aor

The human CD77(-) B cell population represents a heterogeneous subset of cells comprising centroblasts, centrocytes, and plasmablasts, prompting phenotypical revision

The process of becoming an Ig-producing plasma cell takes the mature B cell through the germinal center, where Ig genes are diversified through somatic hypermutation and class switch recombination. To more clearly define functional characteristics of the germinal center dark zone centroblasts and the light zone centrocytes, we have performed expression analysis of the CD77(+) and CD77(-) populatio

Feasibility of noninvasive transthoracic echocardiography/Doppler measurement of coronary flow reserve in left anterior descending coronary artery in patients with acute coronary syndrome: A new technique tested in clinical practice

Objective: The aim of this study was to test the feasibility and accuracy of transthoracic Doppler echocardiography measurement of coronary flow reserve (CFR) in the left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) territory in the clinical setting of the acute coronary syndrome. Methods: Transthoracic Doppler echocardiography measurements of CFR were made in 42 consecutive patients in the distal LA

Photoemission from surface-localized structures on vicinal surfaces: Initial- or final-state superlattice effect?

Strong superlattice effects are reported on E(k(vertical bar vertical bar)) band dispersions measured by angle-resolved photoemission on W(3 3 1) and W(5 5 1), and graphene nanostripes on Ni(7 7 1). A splitting of the dispersions with reciprocal superlattice vector G = 2 pi/L is observed for a surface resonance on W(3 3 1) and W(5 5 1) and for pi-states of graphene/Ni(7 7 1). Photon-energy-depende

Huntingtons sjukdom - ännu ett galet protein?

Huntington's disease is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder caused by an expanded CAG repeat. It is characterized by motor and cognitive disturbances, as well as cellular dysfunction and loss in the basal ganglia and the cerebral cortex. The mutant protein huntingtin aggregates in cells. The toxicity of mutant huntingtin, or the loss of its normal function, causes disruption of cellul

Wobbling excitations in odd-A nuclei with high-j aligned particles

Using the particle-rotor model in which one high-j quasiparticle is coupled to the core of triaxial shape, wobbling excitations are studied. The family of wobbling phonon excitations can be characterized by: (a) very similar intrinsic structure while collective rotation shows the wobbling feature; (b) strong B(E2;I-->I-1) values for Deltan(w)=1 transitions where n(w) expresses the number of wobbli

Familial occurrence of microscopic colitis: a report on five families

BACKGROUND: The etiology and pathogenesis of microscopic colitis is unknown. Whether genetic predisposition is of importance, as in many other gastrointestinal diseases, is unknown. Familial occurrence of collagenous colitis has earlier been reported only in two families. METHODS: Familial occurrence of microscopic colitis was searched for in a Swedish national microscopic colitis register. RESULT

Development of Detector Systems for Internal and Fixed Target Heavy Ion Physics Experiments

This thesis deals with intermediate energy heavy ion reactions with the particular aim to study the nuclear matter equation of state which defines the relation between statistical parameters of a fermionic system. The development of equipment for two experiments, CA47 at The Svedberg Laboratory in Uppsala, Sweden and R16 at Kernfysisch Versneller Instituut (KVI), Groningen, The Netherlands, are d

Asian Models of Agricultural Development and their Relevance to Afrika

This working paper discusses the different Asian experiences of the Green Revolution from the late 1960s to the 1980s in the perspective of earlier developments of agricultural intensification. The intention of the paper is to identify common features and conditions contributing to the considerable success of Asian agriculture over the past 30 years. The authors argue that the Green Revolution mus

Undervisning i konsultationsmetodik behövs i läkarutbildningen.

At Lund University Medical School communication skills are taught during both the preclinical and clinical part of the medical programme. As part of the training during the 5th year the students are required to videotape at least one patient consultation at a local primary health care centre. The students then meet in groups of 6-7 participants and a group leader to watch the recorded consultation

New structural chromosomal rearrangements in congenital leukemia

The karyotypic abnormalities and clinical data on three patients in whom acute leukemia was diagnosed within the first 6 months of life are presented. The four structural chromosomal rearrangements detected in the bone marrow from these patients, i.e., t(7;12)(q36;p13) and t(1;19)(q11;q11) in case 1, t(2;10;11;12)(q21q31;p13;q13;q24) in case 2, and t(11;19)(q23;p13) in case 3, have not previously
