The Prophet Muhammad on the Screen
Until well into the 20th century European and American theatre, Muhammad was a rare guest, but Jesus was not impersonated at all. The movies gradually changed this. Middle Eastern cinema has responded to the success of Jesus films by hesitantly making its own films about Muhammad.
Based on his recent book Muhammad of the Muslims – and of everybody Else, Jakob Skovgaard-Petersen will follow this story up until 21st century satellite tv productions and discuss the constraints and opportunities of impersonating Muhammad and his biography (sira) for Muslim audiences.
